JTR Mygales first and second at Rockingham with Dan Cammish leading home Sam Brabham* Brabham takes Scholarship class just ahead of Harrison Scott
14 September, 2013 - Dan Cammish took a further step closer to his goal of winning the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain, claiming his 22nd consecutive victory this afternoon at Rockingham to increase his points advantage to 207. The Leeds driver led from pole position to chequered flag to head home his team-mate Sam Brabham by 1.8s to record a JTR team 1-2.
“No problems,” said Dan, whose lead advantage at one stage exceeded five seconds before he backed off within sight of the flag. “This track is quite abrasive on the tyres and once I had got away there was no point in pounding the car into the floor for the sake of it. I was managing the gap to save the tyres.” Cammish remains on target to claim the crown tomorrow at Rockingham.
Three different drivers held second place - Jamun’s Jayde Kruger held sway initially, under pressure from his team-mate Juan Rosso, and was afforded a breather on lap two when Rosso spun at Gracelands. But quick early laps from Falcon Motorsport man Harrison Scott saw him up to fourth, from sixth on the grid, and then on to Kruger’s tail after Rosso fell back.
A beautifully executed move down Kruger’s inside at the Tarzan hairpin on lap four gave Scott second place. “I had a really good start and made up two positions,” said 17-year-old rookie Harrison. Once I got clear into second I thought I was home and dry with a big gap to Sam behind me. Unfortunately with four or five laps to go I started to get a fuel surge and I lost massive chunks of time.”
Brabham took advantage of Scott’s problems to move into second with two laps to go and went on to equal his best finish of the season so far, and took with it the Scholarship class win. Scott hung on for third ahead of Argentina’s Rosso, Juan recovering well from his spin to fight back from seventh.
Kruger fell to fifth by the flag, the South African’s progress hampered by incorrect gearing, with USA driver Camren Kaminsky making it three JTR Mygales in the top six. James Abbott, whose Radical Motorsport Mygale flew in Friday’s dry testing, secured seventh ahead of Andy Richardson, who had to start from pit lane after a pre-race battery failure. Jack Dex completed his Formula Ford debut in ninth in the SWB Sinter.
Connor Mills (Meridian) pitted for a safety check after a first-lap clash with the car of Andy Chang, losing a lap, and went on to overhaul another series rookie, Luke Reade (Falcon), for 10th on the final lap. Chang was the only non-finisher, his Falcon Mygale lightly damaged in the opening lap incident with Mills.
Tomorrow’s 23rd and 24th championship rounds are scheduled for 1040 and 1600 respectively, with the latter race screened live on ITV4.
