Davies Takes Fifth Ginetta GT Podium Of Season

Total Control Racing’s Mark Davies sealed his fifth podium of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup season at Rockingham in Northamptonshire on Sunday, 15th September, to close back to within just five points of the coveted championship top three for the Wednesbury squad.Beginning the second of the weekend’s two races, round 22, from fourth on the grid having finished in the top four in the opening encounter on Saturday, 14th September, Davies initially moved up to third off the start with team-mate Carl Breeze – starting eighth – making a rapid getaway too.Through Deene Hairpin for the first time, Breeze held third while Davies was nudged back to fifth but on the second lap at the same corner contact from Rob Boston dropped Breeze back to fifth place and Davies was able to move through into the podium placings.By lap three, Breeze had made his way into second with Davies just 0.8 seconds behind in third place and the team-mates ran pretty much nose-to-tail until lap 14 when reigning champion Breeze locked the brakes at Deene and slipped to fourth position.Davies, of course, moved into second and he remained there to the finish on lap 18 to bag his fifth podium of the campaign. Breeze, meanwhile, had problems with his car locking-up again at the first hairpin on lap 16 and dropped to fifth before being elbowed wide on the final tour by Pepe Massot to conclude a vexing race in seventh position. Even so, he remains second in the championship.During round 21 on Saturday, Davies was again the better placed of the TCR drivers in fourth with Breeze ending the race in an uncharacteristic eighth position. Qualifying for the opening encounter proved tricky with Davies and Breeze a much lower than anticipated ninth and 10th on the grid.By the end of lap one, Davies was up into sixth place but a great start for Breeze came to nothing when a two-car tangle at Deene immediately in front of the TCR driver left him nowhere to go and he sustained hefty front-end damage to his Ginetta G55.Following a brief Safety Car interlude, to clear away the stricken cars from the opening lap melee, Davies held sixth while Breeze was down in 13th position after a pit-stop for the team to try and facilitate some form of temporary repair to the damaged front bumper and loose bonnet.Another incident at Deene on lap six enabled Davies to sweep through into fourth where he stayed to the flag, just 1.4 seconds shy of the podium. Despite the damage to his car, Breeze battled into eighth by the finish even though his vision was partly obscured by the flapping bonnet.“Carl is still struggling with his car, there’s a problem we haven’t been able to find and Ginetta hasn’t up to now, so it’s going back to the factory”, said TCR team principal Lee Brookes, “Even though it looks like Carl is doing alright, he’s having to work very hard at it. Mark did a superb job, he’s collecting the points and he’s on the podium again this weekend so we’re pleased about that.”Contact costs Smith top placing in Clio CupTotal Control Racing’s Rob Smith missed out on a potential career-best Renault UK Clio Cup result during round 14 of the season at Rockingham on Sunday when second corner contact, not of his making, ruled him out of the encounter with broken steering.Having made a superb start from 15th on the grid, the second year saloon car racer managed to cut to the inside through Turn One and the run to Deene Hairpin to scythe his way into the fight for the top five. Running just behind championship leader Josh Files, Smith was then hit twice in succession and the resulting damage enforced his luckless retirement.Showing impressive pace in pre-event testing, Smith was disappointed to miss out on a top 10 slot in qualifying. With everyone beginning the session on wet-weather Dunlop tyres, towards the end as the track began to dry some drivers gambled on taking slicks. Smith and TCR opted to play it safe and remain on treaded rubber but the track dried quicker than expected. Therefore beginning round 13 from the eighth row, Smith made a good start and moved into the top 12 before taking 11th on the third lap. After a Safety Car period, he was nudged back to 12th place where he remained until a few laps from the finish when demoted to 13th position – a post-race exclusion for Josh Wakefield, though, lifted him back into the top 12 and ninth in the Graduate Cup.“Rob just needs that break in qualifying, in hindsight we should have gone to slicks and that decision did cost us”, said Brookes, “Once you’re back down the order, you’ve got to fight your way back up and there are so many things that can happen then. It’s all about qualifying, we’ve got to get that right and then we know Rob can run up there.“We did a set-up change for Sunday’s race for the weather, it looked like it was going to be good but then it all kicked-off at the first corner and there’s nothing you can do then – damage is damage and he had to park it.”Northamptonshire’s Silverstone National Circuit will host rounds 23 and 24 of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup a fortnight from now on 28th/29th September. The Renault UK Clio Cup won’t return to action until 12th/13th October, at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in Kent, for the final two races of its 2013 campaign.Provisional 2013 Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup Driver Standings (after Rd22):2nd Carl Breeze, 690pts; 4th Mark Davies, 426ptsProvisional 2013 Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup Team Standings (after Rd22):2nd Total Control Racing, 991ptsProvisional 2013 Renault UK Clio Cup Driver Standings (after Rd14):14th Rob Smith, 100pts
