Tony Lynch will seek to maintain his lead in the BMW Mini class when the Monster Energy MSA British Rallycross Championship heads to Wales this weekend for the seventh round of the season.
Westhoughton-based racer Tony makes the trip to Pembrey buoyed by arguably his strongest weekend of the year to date last time out at Lydden Hill.
In Kent, the Lucas Oil Team Geriatric driver was in dominant form as he won all three heats and then stormed to victory in the final, adding the Fastest Time of the Day to take a maximum score.
That was enough to move him into the championship lead heading into the business end of the campaign, even when the series’ dropped scores regulation is taken into account.
With no fewer than five podium finishes so far this season - in what is his first year in the MINI class - Tony will now seek to add to his tally in Wales to cement his position on top of the standings.
A slender lead over closest rival David Bell means there will be no margin for error, with Tony well aware of what he needs to do during the weekend ahead.
“Before Lydden Hill I said we had to start scoring big, and that’s exactly what we did,” he said. “If we can do the same this weekend at Pembrey, it will be a massive step towards the championship, although I’ve been around long enough to know that we can’t take anything for granted. Things could easily go against us, so it’s going to be vital to make sure we stay out of trouble and bring home a good result.
“Moving into a new class has been a challenge for us as a team this season, but the boys have done a fantastic job on the car and we’ve got stronger and stronger as the year has gone on to put ourselves in the best position possible with two rounds to go.
“The gap to David at the top of the standings is quite small going into the weekend so the main aim has to be to outscore him as that will keep me in the championship lead. It won’t be an easy weekend by any means, but I’m ready and raring to go.”
