Speedway, Tai Woffinden statement

BRITISH Speedway superstar Tai Woffinden has revealed how he withdrew from this weekend's European Championship within 24-hours of his crash in Sweden last weekend.

Woffinden will miss the last round of the competition and Wolverhampton's play-off clash with Birmingham on Monday as he allows his fractured collarbone time to rest ahead of next Saturday's final Grand Prix in Poland.

He needs just six-points from the meeting in Torun to become Britain's first world champion in 13-years.

Said Woffinden: "I need to clarify this because of some negative reaction from supporters and other people within the sport."Within 24-hours of my crash in the Grand Prix last weekend I had officially withdrawn from both the European Championship final round and Wolverhampton's play-off meetings.

"There is no way I would do a meeting at the weekend but say I won't ride for my club before that. I'm not that type of person."I've tried to keep a low profile again since last weekend and I'm resting up to be in the best possible condition for Torun. I will go there and do my best and see if that's enough to become world champion.

"I'm feeling better every day but there is no way I am going to risk things by riding in the last round of the European Championship."I'm looking forward to Torun and what should be a great atmosphere in a superb venue.

"In the meantime I wish my colleagues at Wolverhampton all the best for Monday at Birmingham."
