SWR boosted its season’s tally of podium finishes to 12 during the final event of the inaugural BRDC Formula 4 Championship season at Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit over the weekend, 28th/29th September, with Matty Graham finishing runner-up in round 22.Matty Graham,SWR,BRDC Formula 4 Championship season at Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit over the weekend, 28th/29th September, with Matty Graham finishing runner-up in round 22.Capping an impressively strong season for the 17-year-old, the seventh rostrum visit of his rookie year in single-seater car racing helped the County Durham racer conclude the campaign fourth in the championship standings – just four points shy of the coveted top three.Team-mate Jack Barlow, meanwhile, unfortunately endured a tough season finale but he still went on to end his debut season in cars sixth in the driver standings. Although not able to add to the five podiums accrued during the year, the Hastings 18-year-old did score in two of the three Donington encounters to end the campaign only nine points outside the championship top five.“Overall we’re really pleased with how the season has gone, we’ve had lots of wins and podiums and we’ve proven SWR is a good, consistently competitive team which was what we set out to achieve when we decided to join F4 this year”, said owner Sean Walkinshaw, “Winning the title this weekend was always going to be a very tall order, but it’s still been a great year.“It is disappointing to just miss out on having at least one driver in the championship top three, but Matty and Jack have both done a fantastic job this year and Matty’s podium in race one made it 12 podiums for the season for the team which is a great achievement.”Graham produced a fantastic performance in qualifying on Saturday morning to secure a front-row start for the opening race of the weekend, lapping just 0.2 seconds shy of pole position, but Barlow was an uncharacteristic 13th fastest after a tough session – leaving a mountain to climb in the races. At the beginning of round 22, Graham held second off the line and initially stayed with eventual champion Jake Hughes while remaining one second clear of his pursuers. Lapping very consistently, the SWR driver confirmed his speed with the second fastest lap of the race and ended the encounter on lap 12 more than two seconds ahead of his nearest challenger.Barlow enjoyed an excellent first lap to climb into ninth position but was elbowed back to 12th on the second tour. Then holding station until lap 10, Barlow unfortunately slipped to 13th place where he remained to the chequered flag. For round 23, Graham lined-up seventh on the ‘reverse grid’ and although shuffled back to ninth on the first lap he quickly hit back and was seventh again by the start of lap three. On lap six, Graham was edged back to ninth again before slipping to 12th a lap later, although he then battled back well to finish the race inside the top 10.Sunday morning’s encounter was another frustrating outing for Barlow who, after starting in 13th place, did manage to work his way into 12th on lap three before being pushed back to 14th position by the finish – overtaking in the tightly packed midfield proving very challenging. For the final race of the season, round 24, Barlow lined-up sixth on the grid – having set the sixth fastest race lap up to that point – with Graham just behind in seventh position. Disappointingly for Barlow his weekend ended much like it began, with frustration, after contact with Seb Morris at Melbourne Hairpin on the opening lap resulted in an eventual retirement to the pits with damage.Graham, meanwhile, was shunted back to 15th position on a chaotic first lap but battled back very impressively to conclude the contest in seventh position after a stellar drive. Lapping within just 0.2 seconds of race winning pace, the SWR driver certainly had the speed for a podium challenge. “It was a tough weekend for Jack from qualifying on really, once you’re further down the grid than you should be it’s almost impossible to come back through in this kind of racing”, reflected team boss Walkinshaw, “We’re disappointed for him he wasn’t able to take another podium but, like Matty, he’s had a very strong debut season. It’s been a pleasure working with them.”Chinese racer Zou Sirui, SWR’s third driver this season, wasn’t in action during the season finale due to clashing commitments back home in the Far East. He, therefore, rounded out the season with a best result of 12th position from the previous event at Snetterton 300 Circuit in Norfolk.Highlights of Donington Park’s final three rounds of the BRDC Formula 4 Championship season will be broadcast on ITV4 and ITV4 HD next Sunday, 6th October, at 18.00.Provisional 2013 BRDC Formula 4 Championship Driver Standings:4th Matty Graham, 376pts; 6th Jack Barlow, 362pts; Zou Sirui – Does Not Score
