The first BRDC Formula 4 championship, using Yokohama as control tyres, has been won by Jake Hughes. The 19 year-old provisionally clinched the title in the first of this weekend's final three races of the season on Saturday and confirmed it with two more excellent results on Sunday.
It was a lights-to-flag win for Hughes in the first race at Donington Park, having claimed pole position and translating this into a commanding win, his sixth of the season.
Third place for Seb Morris meant that Hughes' lead in the title race was now unassailable, with an advantage of 61 points and 60 points available for the two remaining races and he was classified provisional champion.
However, this was confirmed the following day, after the last two races. Both of these were won by Charlie Robertson, who secured the runners-up spot in the 2013 series as a result. His double win and fourth place in the first race on Saturday actually made his weekend tally 78 points, the highest score over the weekend of the entire season and a fitting end to the first season of F4.
Hughes took sixth and fourth place respectively, confirming his title as 2013 BRDC F4 Champion.
As winner of the title, Hughes takes a prize of £25,000, a test in a Carlin Motorsport F3 car and a BRM watch, worth £4,500 while Robertson and third-placed Seb Morris also receive BRM watches.
Commenting, Head of Motorsport at Yokohama HPT Ltd, Mark Evans, said; "On behalf of Yokohama, I would like to offer our congratulations to Jake for becoming the inaugural BRDC F4 Champion. He has driven a superb season, with excellent pace and maturity that outweighs his age and he is a deserving champion.
"I am also delighted with the performance of the Yokohama tyres used by the entire field. The feedback from the drivers, the teams and the organisers has been excellent, in terms of outright performance and grip as well as durability and consistency. It is exactly these qualities that make the tyres perfect for one-make series, ensuring that every driver and every team has exactly the same tyre, which they know they can rely on."
Following the resounding success of the 2013 series, the organisers, MSV Racing, has introduced an F4 Winter Series, consisting of eight races spread over two race weekends. The first takes place at Snetteron on 9/10 November and the second, Brands Hatch on 23/24 November. Each meeting will feature a 20 minute practice session and two 20-minute races on each day and is aimed at potential entrants for the 2014 season, as well as competitors from 2013 to gain extra experience prior to a 2014 campaign.
The cars will be the same as those used in the 2013 season, including Yokohama control tyres.
