Carl Breeze raced to his 13th podium finish of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup season at Silverstone National Circuit over the weekend, 28th/29th September, to comfortably hold on to second position in the driver standings for Wednesbury’s Total Control Racing.Beginning Sunday’s encounter, round 24, from sixth on the grid, the 2012 champion held the place through Copse and managed to move into the top four on lap one before mounting a challenge for third position.Swarming all over the back of Rob Boston’s car, Breeze piled on the pressure lap after lap but finding a way past proved difficult. His attempts gained more urgency as Matt Nicoll-Jones closed up behind and Breeze was finally able to make the breakthrough out of Copse on lap 18 with a superb pass.During round 23 on Saturday, the Kings Lynn racer had a battle on his hands from 10th on the grid and although making one of his customary rapid launches, the path ahead was blocked. Moving into ninth place later in the lap, he then took eighth on the second tour and after swapping positions he made the place his again on lap six.Reeling in the group ahead, Breeze took seventh on lap 14 and on the very next lap moved into sixth position. Not done there, the TCR man had his sights set on more and managed to get alongside Nicoll-Jones into lap 21 to try and wrest fifth away. Sealing the pass on the final tour, post-race he was demoted back to sixth after officials adjudged Breeze to have gained an ‘unfair advantage’.Joined by regular team-mate Mark Davies and FIA World Touring Car Championship racer Alex MacDowall, the latter seeking to gain experience in rear-wheel drive cars during a break in the WTCC calendar, the TCR team-mates each had a mixed weekend.Davies had a best result of ninth place in the second of the weekend’s outings after an impressively strong performance from 22nd and last on the grid, despite struggling with a down-on-power engine in his Ginetta G55.Lining up on the final row for Sunday’s race as a result of retiring from the opener with suspension damage, the Huddersfield driver moved into 18th position on lap one and by the eighth tour he was up into the top 14. Continuing to make good progress, Davies was into 10th position by lap 17 and on the final lap he profited from a retirement for Tom Oliphant to finish in a hard-fought ninth place.MacDowall, returning to the team which carried him to the Vice-Champion’s position in the Renault UK Clio Cup back in 2009, seized the chance to have a run in TCR’s third Ginetta G55 and produced two consistently strong performances.Qualifying as the fastest of the TCR trio in eighth position for the opening race, the Carlisle driver was shuffled back to 13th place but recovered well to break back into the top 10 by lap 17 – setting lap times within just 0.1 seconds of team-mate Breeze’s best. MacDowall was then elevated into ninth when Andrew Watson was given a time penalty. In round 24, the Cumbrian again lost out at the start after being nudged back to 12th place but he broke into the top 10 on lap 13 before grabbing ninth four laps later. Due to the aforementioned retirement for Tom Oliphant, MacDowall moved up into eighth on the last lap.“It’s good to be on the podium with Carl but, as a team, we seemed to struggle a bit all weekend really”, said TCR’s Lee Brookes, “We’ve still got the on-going problem with Carl’s car, there’s something wrong which Ginetta hasn’t been able to identify – you need to go away testing to try and find the problem but we haven’t been able to do that, it all costs money. Carl raced well though.“With Mark, he’s been struggling with the engine power and that unit has gone back to Ginetta to see what can be done. To take the finish he did in race two, from the back, was a really impressive effort. It was great working with Alex again, he did the weekend to learn the heel and toe with the rear-wheel drive. All in all, he did a good job on his first time in the G55.”Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit will host the final three rounds of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup season a fortnight from now on 12th/13th October. Total Control Racing’s Renault UK Clio Cup squad will also be back in action then at the Kent track for the final two races of its 2013 campaign. In the meantime, TCR will travel to Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit in Leicestershire next weekend, 5th/6th October, for the championship finale of the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge.Provisional 2013 Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup Driver Standings (after Rd24):2nd Carl Breeze, 564pts; 4th Mark Davies, 438ptsProvisional 2013 Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup Team Standings (after Rd24):3rd Total Control Racing, 1063pts
