Ralph Boschung brought the curtain down on his maiden ADAC Formula Masters campaign by scoring a sixth podium finish of the season at German Grand Prix circuit Hockenheim last weekend (28/29 September).Competing in only his second year of single-seater racing, the 15-year-old Swiss driver scored his maiden series victory last time out at Slovakia Ring, becoming the third youngest winner in ADAC Formula Masters history in the process. That put Boschung in confident mood ahead of the German event, and the Team KUG Motorsport driver's hopes were further boosted by a strong free practice performance."The weekend began well for me. I set the fastest lap in practice, but things went a little off course in qualifying," explained Boschung. "We tried something on the car that didn't work out, and to make matters worse I lost my wing-mirror and had no time to fit a replacement."This clearly affected the youngster's ability to push the car to its limit and left him somewhat frustrated with an eventual fifth spot. Boschung was quick to demonstrate that he was capable of more however, producing an excellent showing come lights-out. "Fortunately the race went a lot smoother than qualifying," reflected Boschung. "I made two clean overtakes to move into third and take my sixth podium finish of the season, which was very satisfying."Unfortunately race two didn’t end nearly as well. I started fifth again and quickly began to climb through the pack. I was running second for a long time, but in defending my position I was forced off track. When I came back on I had to take quick avoiding action to prevent an accident, which dropped me down the order."With his race effectively over Boschung elected to return to the pits and retire the car, thus ensuring himself a fresher set of tyres for the third and final race of the weekend. Here he would line-up in 17th spot, a starting position that suggested little joy lay ahead for the young Swiss, but a hugely impressive fightback was in store."The final race was good fun even if we couldn't quite reach the podium,” he recalled. "To go from 17th at the start to fifth at the finish obviously requires a fair bit of overtaking, so I was pleased to show what I could do in this respect."The result saw Boschung seal seventh in the end-of-season standings, just nine points shy of sixth spot, and left the teenager ultimately satisfied with his performance at Hockenheim. "All in all it was a good final weekend," he concluded. "Things didn't always go our way but we fought back to take two strong results. Now that the season is over I'll take the opportunity to test a variety of different cars as we look to make a decision about where I’ll be racing in 2014."
