POOLE took control of the Elite League Grand Final with a powerful performance to overcome Birmingham 57-36 in the first leg at Wimborne Road.Skipper Darcy Ward scored a paid maximum for the Pirates with Greg Hancock dropping just one point from five rides, whilst reserve Josh Grajczonek, Maciej Janowski and Tomas H Jonasson were all paid for double-figures too.Jonasson said: “We are all looking for each other on track and off, and everyone delivered the points. We were all one of a kind tonight and when you have such good team spirit it is much easier to team-ride. “We have put ourselves in a good position and now we must go to Birmingham and just be focussed, like we were focussed tonight. Nothing has been won yet so we must go there and do all we can, but we are feeling good with such a good lead.”(SPEEDWAY 2)
SCUNTHORPE promoter Rob Godfrey is hoping Tai Woffinden’s World Championship success can provide a boost for the sport both nationally and in the town.Woffinden was born in Scunthorpe and having returned from Australia at the age of 15 he spent two years with the club as they secured a host of honours at Conference League level.Godfrey said: “This is huge thing for British Speedway and it is huge for Scunthorpe Speedway. It is 13 years since we last had a British World Champion so that really gives the sport in this country a boost whilst I’m sure this must be Scunthorpe’s first ever World Champion in any sport.“I know people in the town have been cheering Tai on and probably had their eyes opened to what a great sport speedway can be. We have a track on Normanby Road that produces some of the finest speedway racing so hopefully lots of them will come along and see what they have been missing. “Of course we expect the next meeting, which kicks off the 2014 season at the Eddie Wright Raceway, will feature Tai, Scunthorpe’s very own World Champion.”

DUDLEY boss Will Pottinger says his side need to build up a handy lead from the home leg of their National League Grand Final with King’s Lynn on Tuesday (7.30).The sides will do battle for the league title on successive nights with the return at the Norfolk Arena on Wednesday, with the Heathens having recently got the better of the Young Stars in the KO Cup.Pottinger said: “We will be looking for a lead to take to King’s Lynn. The bigger the lead we can get, the less pressure there will be on us going to Norfolk on Wednesday.“But it won’t be easy, we know that. Lynn have a potential World Champion of the future in Robert Lambert and he will want to do better than his last visit here. But all our boys are determined to do this. We lost out by one point last year and everyone at the club is desperate to see that put right.”

ISLE Of Wight have again booked in-form Steve Worrall to guest for injured No.1 Adam Ellis in the second leg of their KO Cup semi-final against Mildenhall on Tuesday. The tie is finely poised with the Fen Tigers ten points up from the first leg, and the visitors have called up Ben Morley with Josh Bates ruled out for the rest of the season after a crash at King’s Lynn last week.Isle of Wight co-boss Chris Hunt said: “Our fans can play their part in us reaching the Cup Final by really getting behind the side and cheering them on every inch of the way and, with their help, I firmly believe we can, and will, pull back those ten points.”Mildenhall chairman Kevin Jolly said: “I do strongly believe we can hold onto our lead, if the lads show the hunger and performance they did at King’s Lynn in the most testing of circumstances then there is no reason why we shouldn't have a Cup Final to look forward to on Sunday.”(FIXTURES)TUESDAY OCTOBER 8:NATIONAL LEAGUE GRAND FINAL 1st leg: Dudley v King’s Lynn 7.30NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP S/F 2nd leg: Isle of Wight v Mildenhall 7.30WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 9:NATIONAL LEAGUE GRAND FINAL 2nd leg: King’s Lynn v Dudley 7.30CHALLENGE: Belle Vue Select v Leicester Select 8pm
