Rosso claims twin Formula Ford wins at Brands Hatch

Jamun driver Juan Rosso takes his maiden victory in Formula Ford and follows up with anotherHarrison Scott twice the Scholarship winner, also secures championship runner-up spot12 October, 2013 - Juan Rosso this afternoon became the fifth different race winner of the 2013 Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship season, the 20-year-old Argentinian leading the 28th and 29th rounds from start to finish for Jamun Racing. Harrison Scott was the Scholarship class victor in both races, and also made sure of the championship runner-up position.

Round 28Rosso took command on the run up Hailwoods Hill on the opening lap, blasting past the Radical Motorsport Mygale of Abbott, who had started from pole position for the first time. Juan was lucky to make the start at all - he spun on his way to the grid after over-enthusiastically warming his tyres. “It was my big error. I was trying to warm my tyres and spun. I decided then that I must win, otherwise I would look ridiculous,” said Juan.

Rosso led Radical Motorsport’s James Abbott over the line by a second after the first lap, and kept his advantage fairly constant throughout the 14 laps despite pressure from James. “It was a good race, and great to make the podium at last,” said Abbott, “but my gearbox was giving me some problems between fifth and sixth, it was taking a couple of hits to get it in gear from about half way through the race, and that’s when Juan started to get away from me.”

Harrison Scott’s Falcon Motorsport machine started from fifth on the grid after the Essex 17-year-old missed the opening laps of qualifying, when the track was at its quickest. He dislodged Jayde Kruger from fourth place on the opening lap and moved into third past championship newcomer Simon Rudd on lap three. Then Harrison set about reeling in Abbott, finally achieving his goal of second place after James erred at Druids on the final lap. “He ran a bit wide and I was able to get close,” said Harrison, “and then I was able to get a good tow from him on to the back straight and get past. It was a really good race for me.” It was Scott’s 15th podium finish of the season and his 12th Scholarship class win.

Rosso, who won by 3.4s, was ecstatic to claim his maiden win: “The car was fantastic and this is a track that I love because it is so fast. It’s been a really good weekend so far and I am enjoying it,” he said.

Kruger ran fourth for much of the race despite pressure late on from Sam Brabham, who like Scott had suffered in qualifying and had had to start P9. Sam made steady progress up to fifth and was ready to lift fourth from Kruger, but. “I made a little mistake at Dingle Dell and I lost the gap,” said Sam, who had to settle for fifth ahead of his JTR team-mate Max Marshall.

Andy Richardson put a succession of engine-related testing and qualifying dramas behind him to take seventh - “The first lap of the race was virtually my first complete lap of the circuit,” said Andy - ahead of Camren Kaminsky, who survived a last-corner off-track excursion. Falcon team-mates Rudd and Luke Reade completed the top 10, with Meridian man Connor Mills running at the finish but not classified after losing too much time in the pits with a clutch issue.

Round 29Rosso followed up his 28th-round victory with another win in round 29. For good measure, the Argentinian this time led home his team-mate Jayde Kruger to claim a 1-2 for the Jamun Racing team.

As in the earlier race it was a lightning getaway from the grid that won it for Rosso. Juan rocketed off the front row, overhauling pole man Simon Rudd into Paddock Hill Bend, to establish himself in front. Kruger was Juan’s race-long challenger, the South African following his team-mate’s example by beating Rudd to the first corner. But although Jayde tried everything possible, Juan kept his advantage around the one-second mark for the duration.

“Amazing race and amazing car,” said Rosso. “I had so much grip, I don’t know why. Good power and good brakes, good everything. Jayde was my only problem - the whiter nose of his car in my mirror the whole time.”

Said Jayde: “Juan and I were just too close on pace for me to be able to do anything about him, but it was a good race and a 1-2 for the team is a great result.”

Simon Abbott and Harrison Scott pushed rookie Rudd back to fifth place by Surtees corner on the opening lap, and proceeded to dispute third place for the entire race. A sixth-lap error from Falcon Motorsport man Scott, when he ran wide and over the grass at Sheene, looked to have settled the matter, but Harrison battled back on to James’s tail and lifted the final podium slot three laps from the end.

Harrison, whose finish ensured him championship second in addition to the already-won Scholarship Class title, said: “I managed to get James at last at Westfield; he defended but I managed to switch sides and get the job done. It’s great to have secured championship second and now I can relax and enjoy tomorrow’s race.”

Rudd’s race came to a premature end on the fifth lap when he and the pursuing Camren Kaminsky touched at Paddock Hill Bend. Kaminsky continued but was delayed, finishing seventh behind Abbott, Sam Brabham and Andy Richardson. Max Marshall made the best of it after losing his rear wing on the opening lap to take eighth, inches ahead of Connor Mills, who enjoyed a clean run at last in the Meridian Mygale. Luke Reade completed the top 10 for Falcon.

The final round of the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain blasts off at 3pm tomorrow, live on ITV4.
