Manor MP Motorsport’s Oliver Rowland produced two remarkable race performances at Zandvoort in The Netherlands over the weekend, 12th/13th October, to secure an outstanding winning double in the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup season finale.Able to race in the event during a natural break in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 campaign, the British driver was untouchable in both wet and dry conditions and chalked-up his third and fourth NEC victories with relative ease. The results mean Rowland has finished on the podium in all eight NEC races he has contested this year and, despite missing half of the season, he ends the championship fourth in the standings and the highest placed of the Eurocup interlopers.“It really has been an incredible weekend for Ollie and the team”, said Manor MP Motorsport’s Tony Shaw, “His performances were faultless, right from the first practice, through qualifying and then both races. The conditions in race two were really tough, but he was in a league of his own and made it look easy – even though it was far from easy. It’s a great way to go into the Eurocup finale.”Rowland’s pace was clear to see from the opening practice session and after topping the times there, he just missed out on lapping fastest in the second timed run before taking a very comfortable pole position for the first race.Round 15 on Saturday afternoon was dry and Rowland scorched away from pole, opening a six second lead inside four laps and then moving some 10 seconds clear by lap eight. Four laps later, though, and his hard work was eroded when the Safety Car was deployed following an incident. Racing resumed in time for a final sprint to the flag, Rowland taking the win 1.5 seconds to the good.Starting on pole for round 16 as well, Sunday morning’s race began in starkly contrasting conditions with overnight rain leaving the track saturated. On the grounds of safety, officials elected to start to the race from behind the Safety Car and when the action got underway Rowland pulled clear before a cautionary period on lap four.In a class of his own, the Racing Steps Foundation-backed youngster scorched away after the re-start and eventually ended the encounter almost 15 seconds ahead of the chasing pack. Unsurprisingly, his fastest lap of the race was more than a second quicker than the next best effort.Although Rowland mastered the wet weather in race two, conditions worsened as the day wore on leaving organisers with precious little choice other than to cancel the races scheduled for later in the afternoon – meaning no round 17 for the NEC runners.Rowland and Manor MP Motorsport now turn their attention to the final two races of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season which will take place next weekend, 19th/20th October, at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. Rowland will arrive at the Spanish venue second in the championship table, 11 points shy of the series lead.
