Brands Podium Helps Breeze End Year Ginetta GT Vice-Champion

Total Control Racing’s Carl Breeze secured his 14th podium of the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup season during the final event of the campaign at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit over the weekend, 12th/13th October, to help secure the Vice-Champion’s position in the driver standings.Team-mate Mark Davies, who ended the year in the title race top six, was the quickest of the TCR drivers in qualifying on Saturday morning. He set the seventh fastest time, just under a couple of tenths of a second clear of Alex MacDowall – making his second appearance in the championship to learn the art of rear-wheel drive racing – with Breeze an uncharacteristic 11th on the timesheets. At the beginning of round 25 on Saturday afternoon, all three got away well from the line but Breeze made the best start of all as he moved up into eighth ahead of MacDowall on the first lap, as Davies held station in seventh.Pressuring Davies heavily, Breeze made his move at Hawthorns on lap three to take seventh and Davies subsequently slipped to ninth just ahead of MacDowall. As Breeze pulled away from the pack to try and set off after the lead group, Davies worked hard to recover and grabbed eighth on lap seven before the Safety Car emerged following an incident. The drama didn’t end there, though, when Fergus Walkinshaw’s G55 caught fire as he exited Druids while the race was under caution. Officials decided to call a result after nine laps with Breeze up into sixth, Davies seventh and MacDowall eighth.Round 26 on Sunday morning took place in awful wet conditions and persistent rain made for an incredibly challenging outing. Breeze, lining-up fifth on the grid, made a good start and by the time the leaders exited Druids he was up into third place. On the run to Surtees, the TCR man was challenged by Rob Boston but the latter braked too late and made contact with Jamie Orton’s G55 which enabled Breeze to exit the turn in second place. Initially pressuring race leader Pepe Massot, the outgoing champion soon had to keep an eye on his mirrors as Boston loomed large in the spray and he slipped to third on lap seven at Paddock Hill Bend.Davies, starting in sixth one spot ahead of MacDowall, had to contest almost the entire race with the right-hand door of his Ginetta G55 missing after early contact dislodged it. Undeterred, even though getting soaked in the rainy conditions, Davies pressed on and was up into fourth place by lap six.An unfortunate excursion at Surtees dropped him to sixth but he was determined to get back ahead of Andrew Watson. Challenging hard, as Watson defended and slowed Davies up it gave Orton an opportunity to attack and he relegated Davies to seventh three laps from the finish at Surtees.MacDowall, meanwhile, ended the encounter in eighth place after being nudged back from seventh on lap four. Improving his pace throughout on only his second weekend in rear-wheel drive, the FIA World Touring Car Championship regular posted his quickest lap of the outing on the final lap.In the final race of the year, round 27, Breeze started in fourth, Davies in seventh and MacDowall in eighth. While MacDowall was edged onto the grass out of Druids on the first lap, knocking him back to 10th position, Breeze made progress into third place on lap two as Davies held seventh.Breeze ran in third until lap nine when, after a short Safety Car period, he slipped to fourth behind Boston before being nudged back to fifth behind Matt Nicoll-Jones on lap 11. At that point, Davies was in the mix to challenge his team-mate but a late move into Druids on lap 12 only resulted in the former picking up damage and, ultimately, a retirement. MacDowall came through to finish eighth.“It’s been a tough season really, we’ve had the ongoing problem with Carl’s car which nobody at Ginetta has been able to get to the bottom of – his pace has been compromised for a long time so to end the year on the podium is good”, said TCR team principal Lee Brookes.“Mark’s shown some good pace this year, there have been a few unfortunate incidents along the way but he’s done a good job and has been a pleasure to work with. We’ve enjoyed having Alex back in the team again this weekend too, he wanted to come in to learn the rear-wheel drive and he’s done a really solid job.”Frustrating end to Clio Cup season for SmithFor TCR’s Renault UK Clio Cup driver Rob Smith, the final two rounds of his season ended with yet more frustration following contact in both races not of his making. Displaying impressive pace in qualifying and race conditions, even though he had to miss the pre-event test due to university commitments, the 21-year-old was once again the victim of other drivers’ misdemeanours.Beginning round 15 on Saturday from 13th on the grid, have qualified within one second of the front row, Smith moved up into 11th on lap one and then broke into the prized top 10 the next time around. Following a Safety Car period, racing got back underway on the fifth tour but it wasn’t long before the action fell under caution for a second time.Racing resumed on lap 10 and all looked good for Rob to mount a challenge on the group ahead but contact from Jordan Stilp, which the rookie driver was penalised for post-race, at Sheene Curve left the TCR car with a broken steering arm and subsequent retirement. In the rain-affected final round on Sunday, Smith hoped for an upturn in fortunes and his great start to the race set the scene nicely. Slicing his way through from 13th position into the top 10, at Druids it all went wrong when he was tagged into a spin. Although able to get going again, albeit down in 19th place overall, he was annoyed to only take a 14th place finish from a race which promised much.“It’s been one of those seasons for Rob unfortunately”, commented Brookes, “He’s been caught-up in a lot of contact this year, through no fault of his own, and this weekend he showed good pace in qualifying and did well in the races. There was nothing he could do about either of the incidents, it’s disappointing as he deserved more from the season but that’s the way it goes sometimes in racing.”Final 2013 Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup Driver Standings:2nd Carl Breeze, 626pts; 6th Mark Davies, 470pts; 18th Alex MacDowall, 68pts; 24th David Dickenson, 19ptsFinal 2013 Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup Team Standings:3rd Total Control Racing, 1171ptsFinal 2013 Renault UK Clio Cup Driver Standings:14th Rob Smith, 107ptsFinal 2013 Renault UK Clio Cup ‘Graduate Cup’ Standings:10th Rob Smith, 170ptsFinal 2013 Renault UK Clio Cup Team Standings:8th Total Control Racing, 107pts
