SOMERSET held off stubborn resistance from Edinburgh to be crowned Premier League Champions for the first time at the Oaktree Arena on Monday.
The Rebels won the second leg of the Grand Final 49-44 for a three-point aggregate success, having been taken to the last race before they could mathematically claim the title.
Somerset promoter Debbie Hancock said: “After coming so close to winning the title last year you wonder if you will ever get the chance again, but we have now laid that ghost to rest.
“The guys have been absolutely brilliant all year, and they did it again for once last time. Edinburgh really made us work hard for our win, as we knew they would, we have had some terrific battles in our matches with them this year, and all credit to the Monarchs and their supporters for making it such a great Final.”

SOMERSET skipper Jason Doyle paid tribute to club legend Emil Kramer following their Premier League title triumph on Monday.
Swedish rider Kramer spent four years with the Rebels but tragically lost his life in a road accident back in 2009.
Doyle said: “This one is for Emil. He was Somerset through and through when he was tragically taken from us.
“No doubt he is up there tonight looking down on us and enjoying this moment, and I would like to dedicate our Championship success to the ‘big fella’… this is for you Emil.”

WOLVERHAMPTON owner Chris Van Straaten has paid tribute to club sponsors Parrys International who are staying on board for a stunning 14th successive season at Monmore.
It’s a dramatic turnaround as Dave Parry, a former rider and team manager, announced earlier this year he was ready to close his Cheslyn Hay international coach tour business.
Said Van Straaten: “It’s a remarkable show of support from Parrys International and I was very proud and honoured to announce the news at our presentation night last Friday.
“It’s a record to have a 14th successive season as a sponsor and our appreciation goes to Dave Parry and all his staff. We look forward to carrying the Parrys International name once again with pride and hope we can go one better next season.”

DUDLEY and the Isle of Wight are set to contest the remaining item of silverware at National League level with the Knockout Cup Final this week.
The Heathens have won every competition they have taken part in this season, whilst the injury-hit Islanders are looking to upset the odds again after their dramatic semi-final victory over Mildenhall. Dudley stage the first leg of the Final on Tuesday, with the return on the Island on Wednesday.
Dudley boss Will Pottinger said: “It would be a dream come true for us to complete the clean sweep. It’s been a remarkable season, especially when you consider we had to tear apart last season’s team which went so close to winning the league.”
Islanders co-boss Chris Hunt said: “The six-man side we have managed to piece together will have no real pressure placed upon them, as all myself and co-manager Kev Shepherd will be drumming into each of them is to go out on track and ride to the best of their ability. If they do, you never know what might happen.”
