osh Caygill To Fly Flag For UK In Scirocco R Cup

Josh Caygill will embark on his greatest challenge yet in only his second year of saloon car racing in 2014 after today, Monday, 16th December, revealing he will fly the flag for the UK in the European based Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup alongside a dovetailed season in the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup.Netherton 24-year-old Caygill, a former motorcycle racer in the British Supersport Championship, made excellent progress during his maiden campaign on four wheels last year and steered his Golf GTi to ninth overall in the VW Racing Cup, with eight top 10 finishes and a best result of sixth place.Electing to switch to a Volkswagen Scirocco for his second season in the British-based category with the AWM Motorsport team, the West Yorkshireman is now delighted to confirm he will also race a 2.0-litre Scirocco in Volkswagen’s flagship one-make championship in Europe.Having gone through an intensive evaluation process at Oschersleben in Germany last month, Caygill impressed to earn one of the coveted seats in next year’s Scirocco R Cup which runs as a key support category to the DTM touring car series and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.“I’d have been devastated if I hadn’t got one of the drives in the Scirocco R Cup”, commented the Briton, “It’s perfect for me with it being only my second season in cars, instructors are out on track watching you in each session and then they go through all of the data with you – that’s just what I need at this point. It’ll be a challenge learning all of the tracks but I can’t wait.”Unfortunately for Caygill, the VW Racing Cup and Scirocco R Cup calendars do have a couple of date clashes in 2014 so a championship bid during his second year in the British series will be a major challenge at best. His focus, though, is on gaining as much race experience as possible during his sophomore year in cars and he says he’ll be treating each race weekend as a standalone event.“You can practice and test a car until you’re blue in the face but there’s nothing like getting actual race experience, and that’s what I need”, added Caygill, “You need to learn what sort of moves to make, where to put yourself on the track, and that can only come with what you learn in a racing environment. We’re going to have a proper go at both championships and see how we get on.”Caygill joins TSM management stable ahead of 2014 seasonAhead of his second season racing on four wheels, Caygill’s preparation has been boosted by joining the Tim Sugden Motorsport management stable which represents several top drivers, including fellow Yorkshireman Sam Tordoff who races in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. In the space of just a few weeks since linking-up with Bradford-based Sugden, Caygill’s driving has seen a marked improvement and he is confident further steps forward during winter testing – which will also include participation in the Dunlop Dubai 24 Hour Race in January – are guaranteed.“We’ve tried to fast-track the process a bit since moving into cars and we did make some mistakes during the early part of last season”, he commented, “I’ve only been working with Tim [Sugden] for about three months but it’s already had a big impact. I’ve had some lessons with him and that has made a major difference, just ironing out a few things which mean we’ll be stronger next year.”Caygill’s first competitive outing at the wheel of his newly built, AWM-prepared Volkswagen Scirocco in the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup will take place on Easter Monday, 21st April, at his ‘home’ circuit, Oulton Park in Cheshire. The British series then takes in visits to Rockingham, Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit and Snetterton 300 Circuit before a trip to Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium in mid-July. It makes a return to UK soil in August at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit with the championship finale scheduled for the weekend of 13th/14th September at Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit.Hockenheim in Germany hosts the season curtain-raiser for the Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup at the beginning of May before visiting Oschersleben and the Norisring street circuit. Austria’s Red Bull Ring will kick-off the second half of the season in early August before a return to Germany for an outing at the Nurburgring. The season will conclude back at Hockenheim on 18th/19th October.First, though, will be Caygill’s endurance racing debut in the Dunlop Dubai 24 Hours as part of a five driver line-up at the KPM Racing team, which is fielding a Mk6 Volkswagen Golf. The ninth edition of the Middle Eastern encounter takes place on 10th/11th January in the United Arab Emirates.
