Pirelli races away with Formula One extension

Pirelli has announced a three-year extension to its status as the exclusive supplier of tyres to the Formula One motor racing championship.

The new deal takes effect from the forthcoming 2014 season and has been struck with the FIA, motorsport’s global governing body.

The FIA had stated in October that its contract with the Italian company would continue through an undefined transition period before any eventual tender. Pirelli had then proposed a five-year deal.

The early stages of the 2013 F1 season were marked by a number of delamination issues with Pirelli’s tyres. The company suffered negative publicity as these issues were highlighted at a number of races eventually leading to a redesign for the remainder of the season. Pirelli said that it has been working with the FIA and F1 teams to address these issues, resulting in “important changes” to the sport’s regulations regarding the testing of tyres.

These changes, which Pirelli said would be introduced in the “best interests of the sport”, will include one of the 12 days of official pre-season testing being dedicated exclusively to wet tyre testing. Each team will also dedicate one of their eight days of in-season testing, as prescribed in the 2014 Sporting Regulations, exclusively to tyre testing. This means that during each of the eight days of in-season testing, at least one team – and up to a maximum of two – will be concentrating on tyre testing along with Pirelli’s engineers.
