Successful single-seater and ‘tin top’ racing team Hillspeed is set to return to the annual Fun Cup 25 Hours at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium this year with an expanded two-car entry, having secured a memorable double podium finish on its debut in the 2013 staging of the popular endurance event.Fielding the highly competitive all-British line-up of James Walker, Tim Sugden, Lee Atkins and father and son duo Ian and Struan Moore during last year’s race, the Hathersage team bagged silverware in both the British class and the Petrol class after finishing inside the top three of each.Now focused on challenging for more podium glory in 2014, Hillspeed is aiming to build on its success and return to the world-famous Spa circuit with a pair of 1800cc Volkswagen/Audi powered, VW Beetle-shelled silhouette racers for this year’s event on Saturday, 12th July.“Last year the whole Hillspeed team put a huge amount of effort into our debut at the 25 hour race at Spa”, explained team principal Richard Ollerenshaw, “After a great job by all the drivers we ended up with a podium so it shows we’re capable of running two cars. The unique, fun atmosphere is another reason why we want to do it again. We know we’re good enough to finish first and second.”In addition to its plans for the Fun Cup 25 Hours, Hillspeed isn’t ruling out participation in some of the UK-based Fun Cup events. The British season begins in early April at Oulton Park and concludes back at the picturesque Cheshire venue in October, with a non-championship event at Donington Park following in November.Ollerenshaw added: “Last year we did run in a few of the UK events prior to Spa so we were familiar with the car and some of our drivers could get some seat time. We do have a car available, should people want to try it out for the first time and see what it’s all about.“We’re also talking to customers who have their own car but want the skills of a professional team behind them. The beauty of the Fun Cup championship is that it enables people of all abilities to go racing for very little financial commitment – plus you have a lot of fun while doing it!”Running successful teams in BRDC Formula 4, Protyre Formula Renault and Ginetta Junior, as well as having held a strong race-winning presence last year in the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup, Hillspeed is now bidding to emulate that glory in the ranks of the Fun Cup.Welcoming the news of the team’s return to the Fun Cup 25 Hours, championship director Paul Rose said: “Hillspeed did remarkably well at the Spa 25 hour race in 2013. To achieve what they did at the event, considering it was their first endurance race of that magnitude, was quite remarkable – I was truly impressed.“They clearly demonstrated what a professional ship they run and I am delighted Hillspeed might be branching out and adding a second Fun Cup car to their fleet. They are an asset to the championship and a great team to work with.”
