Campos Racing’s Sean Walkinshaw has declared himself very happy with his performance during timed pre-season testing over the weekend for the rebranded EuroFormula Open at Jerez in Spain, having ended the two-day outing with the eighth fastest time overall. The 20-year-old, embarking on his first campaign in a current generation Dallara F312 in the category formerly known as the European F3 Open, was consistently strong across both days in wet and dry conditions.Completing a total of 75 laps on Friday, 14th February, the Chipping Norton racer ended up ninth fastest with a best lap of 1m38.310 seconds (162.112 km/h) posted during the last of the day’s four timed sessions.Improving his pace noticeably on Saturday, 15th February, Sean chalked-up 85 laps throughout the final day. His best time of the test, 1m37.109 seconds (164.117 km/h), came during the penultimate run and ultimately placed him eighth quickest and little more than 0.2 seconds shy of the top four.“It all went pretty well”, said the Oxfordshire driver, “On the second day we decided to use new tyres quite early on, instead of pounding round on used ones, and I was really happy with the best time I managed. So far, the championship looks as though it’s going to be very competitive.“The conditions were exactly the same on both days, it started off wet but dried out so there was a good opportunity to get a good mix of running in. Everyone at the team seemed happy with the pace we showed, I’m working well with my engineer and the Campos mechanics and we managed to build on the good work we did before the winter break.”Next up for Sean a fortnight from now will be the opening round of the EuroFormula Open’s 2014 Winter Series, taking place at Paul Ricard in the south of France on Saturday, 1st March. The event is preceded by a test outing at the Le Castellet track on Friday, 28th February.“I’m really looking forward to the Winter Series, it’s going to be fantastic being back racing and it will be good preparation for the main championship”, added Sean, “After the Jerez test everyone seems closely matched, so it should be pretty interesting when the racing itself actually starts.”
