Young Scottish motor racing star Gregor Ramsay had a very strong first collective test for the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup at Spain’s Motorland Aragon circuit on Sunday and Monday.The 17-year-old Eurocup rookie bounced back from a difficult day of problems on Sunday to set a quick pace on Monday, and was unlucky not to emerge as the fastest of the three young British drivers present at the test.Ramsay suffered a gearbox oil leak on Sunday in his car, rebuilt for the 2014 season by the Belgian KTR team, for which he will drive in the coming campaign. But the team methodically worked through the glitch, and Gregor went quickest of the three Brits in Monday morning’s session.His lap time put him 13th fastest overall of the 33 drivers present. He was within seven tenths of a second of the overall fastest, and with a lap of almost two minutes that shows how incredibly close the competition is in the Formula Renault Eurocup. The performance came despite being held up on his best lap on new tyres, which cost him around half a second and a place comfortably in the top 10.On Monday afternoon, Ramsay again hit traffic on his only set of new tyres. As a result he was pipped to the post as fastest Briton overall in the test by less than one hundredth of a second.Gregor is stepping up to the Eurocup for his first season running under a British licence issued by the MSA, the UK governing body of motorsport. He first raced cars at the age of 15 under an Italian licence in Formula Abarth thanks to the guidance of Ferrari Driver Academy head Luca Baldisserri, becoming one of the youngest British winners of an international motor race when he triumphed at Vallelunga at the age of 16 and taking eighth place in the category’s European Series. Ramsay is also now affiliated to the Scottish Motor Racing Club.“It was a good day on Monday,” he said. “We had a few problems on Sunday but we managed to get them sorted out, and it was disappointing to be pipped to fastest Brit by such a tight margin!“If I hadn’t got a bit of traffic on my best lap coming out of the chicane, then I would have been much faster and would have ended the test much higher up the order.“I’m looking forward to the season though – the first Eurocup races are at Aragon at the end of April [on 26th/27th April] and it should be good! I’m working well with the KTR team and things are looking strong for 2014.”KTR boss Kurt Mollekens, a top former international racer, added: “Gregor did very well to get so close to the pace, with the potential to be even closer. He is making great steps up and we are very satisfied.”With Eurocup competitors allowed to enter a limited number of Formula Renault 2.0 races in other series, Gregor and the KTR team will also undertake three rounds of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup. The first of these will be at the Italian Grand Prix circuit of Monza on 12th/13th April, acting as a curtain raiser to the Eurocup season.Before then there is a busy schedule of testing, with Ramsay next in action at the French track of Paul Ricard next week, following further tests back in Spain at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya and at Jerez.Gregor has continued support this season from Colin and Chris Weir, and is managed full-time by his father, former racer Scott Ramsay, who has guided him since his karting career began at the age of nine.
