Denmark are the 2014 Monster Energy Speedway World Cup Champions after stealing victory in one of the best finishes the tournament has ever seen.
Speedway has a habit of producing moments of drama that very few other sports match and that was proved again on Saturday night as the World Cup hit Bydgoszcz, Poland.
The home team were the favourites to take a second gold medal in a row and they looked set to do it, but the Danish team dug deeper than ever before to hit back and set up an incredible finish.
After 79 races, three countries and eight teams it all came down to the very last race. The highest placing finisher out of Poland and Denmark would take World Cup glory, the loser had to settle for silver.
Poland’s Janusz Kolodziej made the perfect start to get ahead of Danish rival Niels-Kristian Iversen and the Polish fans went wild going through every turn with their man and willing him home – but Denmark weren’t done yet.
After stalking his man for three and a half laps Iversen made his move on the last corner of the last lap and got enough speed to edge ahead on the line and take the win – and a gold medal for his country.
It was an awesome end to what was one of the best tournaments in memory, the racing was on another level all week and it was a great showcase for speedway.
With Denmark taking gold and Poland silver it was Team Australia who grabbed the last spot on the podium, inspired by Monster Energy’s Darcy Ward and Chris Holder.
The Aussies made a bad start but came on strong in the second half of the meeting and in the end they finished just two points behind the winners, maybe next year will finally be their year.
Tai Woffinden was Team GB’s best scorer but even the Champ couldn’t stop the Brits coming fourth, but they were stoked to make it to the Final after four years out of it.
The tournament had everything you could want and more; great racing, awesome atmospheres, insane drama on the track and a finish that left people speechless.
