Marco Wittmann seems unstoppable in his campaign to clinch the title in the most popular international touring car race series.
The BMW pilot won Sunday’s race on the Nürburgring, the seventh of ten DTM rounds, and with his fourth victory of the season extended his lead in the driver’s classification by 64 points.
Heading into the race on the ultra-fast Ventus Race Plus option tyres from the premium manufacturer Hankook, the pole-sitter controlled the field from the start and convincingly defended his lead in the second half on the harder Ventus Race baseline slicks.
This means that fourth place at the next round on the Lausitzring will be enough for Wittmann to take home an early DTM title.
Right up until the start of the race, Wittmann’s rivals had hoped for the unpredictable Eifel weather and “The Ring’s” legendary torrential rain. None more than second-ranking Mattias Ekström (Audi) who took up the race from 22nd and who had anticipated a wet track in order to work his way up the field. But the entire race remained dry and Marco Wittmann turned his laps unchallenged at the head of the field.
