Porsche Club Championship: Bradshaw's Donington Double‏

Tom Bradshaw took two very different wins as the Baylis & Harding Porsche Club Championship with Pirelli visited Donington Park in the East Midlands for two races, dominating race one but having to work his way through the pack to take his second victory. Championship leader Pete Morris took two second places to continue his perfect run of podium finishes, while overall points rival Mark Koeberle took a win and a second place in Class Two.QualifyingBradshaw was the man to beat in qualifying, the Hartech 996 C2 coming out on top after an early shuffle of fastest times that had also seen Paragon pairing Adrian Slater and Mark Sumpter each briefly quickest. Bradshaw parked up before the end of the session happy with his time – ending up just over a second quicker than next quickest Slater.“The car was spot on so it was a routine session,” said Bradshaw, “I got the tyres up to temperature and the balance of the car was there straightaway so I popped in a couple of laps and parked up to keep an eye on the times.”Morris was third quickest, leapfrogging Sumpter for the position with minutes to go, while Mark McAleer was fifth ahead of Richard Ellis. Koeberle took Class Two pole in his 968 CS – fine reward for his County Classics team on the tenth anniversary of their debut in the series – with Stuart Ings second and the hugely experienced Brian Robinson third.“We tested here and worked on the dampers,” said Koeberle, “and got a handle on the circuit, and it went well.”Race OneBradshaw and Slater were slow away compressing the front of the field – and the man to suffer was the fast-starting Mark McAleer who was left with nowhere to go and lost ground with two wheels on the grass. Bradshaw held on to lead Slater’s 964 C2 into the first corner, and then pushed hard on the opening lap to cross the line clear of Slater, Sumpter and Morris, these four in turn clear of Richard Ellis and Jonathan Evans.Bradshaw continued to lap quickly, setting fastest race laps on his second and third tours to open a gap, as a mistake from Slater at Coppice on lap four saw Sumpter into second and Morris right with him. Morris took his Strasse 996 inside Slater along the pit straight to take third and set off after Sumpter, the dicing behind enabling Bradshaw to further extend his advantage. With the leader long gone the battle for second was one of a number of good dices down the field, Morris looking for a way past Sumpter round the outside into Redgate before finally getting a better exit from the chicane and powering past on lap 15. Sumpter looked to respond in kind the next lap but Morris held on.At the flag Bradshaw had a commanding lead, Morris having eased clear of Sumpter as they encountered backmarkers to take second. Slater was fourth ahead of Ellis, with McAleer having recovered to sixth and David Bottereill seventh from 12th on the grid.“It was almost a bit naughty at the start, I had got clutch slip on the green flag lap but then they seemed to hold the lights for ages and I was having problems,” said Bradshaw. “I pushed really hard in case there was a penalty, but the tyres felt great so I was able to push hard again near the end. I had time to be careful going through the back markers, but most of them saw me coming.”“What a race!” said Morris. “Mark Sumpter knew where to hold me up and block a bit but I eventually got past him and then outbraked myself and just held on. We respect each other so can run close and that is what racing is about, we were so close but never touched.”“I was defending almost every lap,” said Sumpter, “and was a bit annoyed I let Pete past. He got a good exit from the chicane and went round the outside of me. We had a good race, he went over the kerbs a couple of laps later but I didn’t have the power on the straight to get back at him, our car works better on the twisty section of the circuit.”Class Two went to Mark Koeberle, his fifth win in the last six races, but in a fraught battle behind Robinson was closing in the final laps with Ings third.“That was a good race,” said Koeberle, “everything went to plan, there was a lot going on all round me and I was trying to gauge it all and do what I had to.”Race TwoBradshaw’s clutch was going on the line and at the start his 996 was swamped by the rows behind, the poleman seventh into the opening corner as Morris led from Sumpter and Slater. Sixth at the end of lap one, Bradshaw went past Ellis at the Old Hairpin and set off after the lead group.Morris had opened a gap but that came to naught as the Safety Car came out at the end of lap three with a car off the circuit at Coppice, the field closing up and Bradshaw joining the lead group. Released after three laps, Morris was under pressure from Sumpter right away, Bradshaw quickly into fourth.McAleer passed Sumpter on lap eight, Bradshaw also easing past. Morris was pushing hard and set fastest race lap, but Bradshaw responded with a quickest lap of his own and went past McAleer at the Old Hairpin and set off after the leader.Side by side across the line going into lap 11, Morris held on through Redgate but Bradshaw was past later in the lap. Morris then challenged back, the pair trading fastest lap before Bradshaw came out on top for his second win of the day. Sumpter came home third with McAleer falling away with brake issues. Ellis took fifth after an entertaining multi-lap battle with Slater.“I lost my clutch at the start,” said Bradshaw, “it had been slipping in race one so I was seventh or eighth into the first corner but I was quick out the back of the circuit and managed to line a few people up through the Old Hairpin. I almost came a cropper trying that on Pete but luckily he had seen me, and I got past him at the chicane on the second time of trying. Two very different wins, the first was a controlled race but I really had to fight for it in race two.”“It’s been a good weekend,” said Morris. “The Safety Car didn’t really help me as I had a lead at that point, but two seconds and keep scoring points is great. We had a good battle with Tom, I had a smile on my face and that’s eleven podiums out of eleven now.”“That was eventful, first lap I go a big thump in the back from my team-mate,” said Sumpter, “I’m sure it wasn’t intentional. We were in the thick of it for most of the race and that is what it’s all about, clean close racing, the top guys are driving so well.”In class two Koeberle post places early on to run third, Ings leading with Robinson behind. Koeberle took second around mid-distance, but Ings held on to take the win with his Hartech Boxster.“It was quite a battle,” said Ings, “I had things under control early on but then they all started coming back at me. I had to push hard, the Safety Car didn’t really affect my race but really pleased with the day.”Baylis & Harding Porsche Club Championship with Pirelli, Round Ten (20 Laps): 1 Tom Bradshaw (996 C2); 2 Pete Morris (996 C2) +20.112s; 3 Mark Sumpter (964 C2); 4 Adrian Slater (964 C2); 5 Richard Ellis (993 C2); 6 Mark McAleer (993 C2); 7 David Botterill (964 C2); 8 John McCullagh (Boxster S); 9 Jonathan Evans (Boxster S); 10 Mark Koeberle (968 CS).
