John Bryant-Meisner targets GP3 points after exciting debut weekend

ADD Motorsports driver John Bryant-Meisner was happy with his first outing in the GP3 Series with Trident.

The racer was close to a Top 10 finish in his first race at Spa-Francorchamps before getting hit from behind with a lap to go.

Despite difficult conditions and trying to get to grips with the tyres and new car, the Swede acquitted himself as well as he could have hoped.

And he believes with more time behind the wheel there’s no reason why he can’t get among the points before the end of the season.

He said: “It was a learning weekend. There was lots of information to take on board and it was a bit of an overload, but I really enjoyed it.

“If it had been really dry, or really wet, maybe things could have been better, but even the experienced drivers were struggling in the conditions, so I couldn’t have expected much more to be honest.

“It will be nice to take everything I’ve learned over the last week and over these last few days into a fresh weekend and get in a full practice and decent qualifier and see what I can do.

“It’s early days, but the car is good and the pace was there.”With the weather conditions tricky and a couple of yellow and red flags in practice, John felt he didn’t really get enough quality time with the car or tyres before qualifying. He used wets for the first time during qualifying and after a few laps was in the Top 6.

But from here he found he didn’t have full throttle and couldn’t improve upon his lap time, qualifying in 24th place. He later discovered the engine had gone into safe mode as the car didn’t like being on the limiter. Race One took place in damp conditions and he changed tyres at the last minute. But his pace was good and although he was a little behind, he caught up with the rest when the safety car came out. He was P18 when a crash in front allowed him to overtake six drivers and he was honing in on the Top 10 when he was hit from behind - unfortunately ending his race with a lap to go.

John got off to a good start in Race Two, but found it difficult to overtake in the conditions and had a few problems with his under-steer, so had to be content with finishing in 22nd place. He added: “It was a pretty full-on weekend, made so much harder because of the conditions and tyres. “But our goal is to go away and keep learning as much as possible, do the simulator and keep seeing the team.“It will take time as it is so different, but I don’t think it will be too hard to be up there and getting some points by the end of the season.“It’s about taking everything on board and getting the qualifier right. If you can do well in qualifying, you always have a chance.“I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve during the rest of the season.”
