Following a summer break of more than a month since his last race outing, Ahmad Al Harthy will return to action with the Oman Racing Team this weekend, 30th/31st August, when the Avon Tyres British GT Championship resumes at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in Kent.Round six of the 2014 campaign, which is the penultimate race of the British GT season, will be a hotly-contested 120 minute affair and having emerged victorious in the longer three-hour outing at Silverstone at the beginning of June, hopes of a front-running challenge are unsurprisingly high.Currently fourth in the championship standings, just 14 points shy of the coveted top three, Ahmad and British team-mate Michael Caine know their Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3, which has taken a brace of victories this year, has the capability of a strong performance at Brands Hatch.In the team standings in the headline GT3 category, the squad – which carries prestigious backing from Oman Air, Oman Ministry of Tourism, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs, Nawras, National Bank of Oman and Al Hashar Group/Aston Martin Oman – is in second position and the highest placed of the Aston Martin teams.“We’re all really looking forward to being back in action at the weekend, with two races to go there’s still a lot to play for in the championship and we’re determined to be back on the podium”, said Muscat racer Ahmad, “It’s been a strong first season with Aston Martin, the car is fantastic and the team has done an amazing job all year.“Personally, I don’t have all that much experience of the GP circuit at Brands but it is a great track and a real challenge too – especially with a grid as big as the one we have in British GT. So much can happen in GT racing and although two hours is a relatively short race compared to some, it’s still demanding. We’d love to try and put the Oman Racing Team back on the top step of the podium.”In between this weekend’s action and the previous British GT round, the Oman Racing Team took part in round four of the Blancpain Endurance Series season, the Total 24 Hours of Spa, at the world famous Belgian track.Although an unfortunate accident put paid to hopes of a potential top 10 finish, the experience gained will stand the squad in good stead ahead of this weekend’s home event for Wrotham’s Motorbase Performance – the outfit which prepares the Oman Racing Team cars.“We were all very disappointed with how the 24 Hour race ended, but we all learnt so much and our package was very competitive”, added Ahmad, “Brands Hatch is a completely different track, of course, but there’s definitely a lot of confidence in the team. We’re expecting a lot of support with it being Motorbase’s home round, hopefully we can deliver a strong result for the guys to celebrate.”Following two 60-minute free practice sessions on Saturday, 30th August, British GT qualifying for round nine of the season will begin at 16.15.
