Jamie Caroline Robbed Of Second Career Win At Rockingham Ginetta Junior

Jamie Caroline was robbed of a certain victory during the eighth event of the Ginetta Junior Championship season at Rockingham in Northamptonshire over the weekend, 6th/7th September, after last corner, last lap contact while in the lead of round 15 for Total Control Racing.Beginning the first of the weekend’s two races on Saturday from third on the grid after a highly competitive showing in qualifying, missing out on pole position by just 0.3 seconds, the 15-year-old produced a sensational opening lap and quickly hit the front.Running at the head of the lead pack until part way through lap six, Caroline was elbowed back to second position at Tarzan by Lando Norris but then re-took the lead on the seventh tour before swapping positions again a couple of times with his rival.Importantly holding the lead into the final lap, Caroline’s Ginetta G40 was then knocked into a spin by Norris at Brook Chicane – the final corner – and the TCR youngster eventually took the flag in fifth position. Post-race, though, an unrelated penalty for James Kellett hoisted Caroline into fourth. In round 16 on Sunday morning, Caroline lined-up on the front row of the grid alongside pole-sitter Kellett and ran close behind his rival for the first couple of laps. On the third tour out of Pif Paf, though, he lost crucial time when edged slightly wide. Slipping back to fourth position, he remained there to the flag on lap eight to again miss out on what would have been a well-deserved podium.“Saturday was gutting, we’d got the win – a guaranteed win – but then, out of the blue, someone cut the corner and took us out”, reflected TCR team principal Lee Brookes, “It was such a shame, Jamie really deserved that one and he worked hard for it, but at least we’ve got the pace now to race after the problems at Knockhill. Fingers crossed for Silverstone now.”Team-mate Matt Chapman started round 15 from the sixth row of the grid and ran in the thick of a tight midfield battle for the duration. Although shuffled down to 13th spot on lap seven, he hit back to take 12th place a lap later and that became 11th position after the finish following Kellett’s penalty.Beginning round 16 from inside the top 10, Chapman was unfortunately edged down to 14th place on a busy opening lap but he made the most of a mid-pack scuffle on lap three to make his way into 11th position and become part of a close battle at the fringe of the top 10.Although slipping to 12th place on lap four, Chapman was back into 11th spot a couple of laps later and finished the race just a couple of tenths of a second shy of the coveted top 10 behind rivals Alex Sedgwick and Jack Rawles.“Matt’s a talented kid but is still learning a lot and he’s coming from further behind than some of the drivers, especially as he hasn’t done too much testing”, commented Brookes, “He’s definitely getting there and with a bit more luck this weekend, he could have had a couple of top 10 results.”Monger signs for TCR for final two events of Ginetta Junior seasonAfter the conclusion of this weekend’s Ginetta Junior Championship event on Sunday afternoon, TCR agreed a deal with privateer runner Billy Monger to run the 14-year-old’s car during the final two race meetings of the 2014 season at Silverstone National Circuit and Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit.Currently holding 15th position in the driver standings in his rookie year, having secured a best result of ninth place on two occasions, the Charlwood-based school pupil will now team-up with Caroline and Chapman at race-winning squad TCR when the season resumes in three weeks. After a highly successful karting career, which delivered two British titles, Monger entered the Ginetta Junior Scholarship in October 2013 to get his first taste of racing cars and he is certainly an exciting young talent for the future.“We’re obviously very happy to be running Billy for the last couple of rounds, he’s a quick young driver and he’s done a good job so far in his first year”, said TCR boss Brookes, “He’s definitely going to benefit from sharing the data of Jamie and Matt and we’re confident we can help him improve to have a strong end to the season. It’s great to be back up to three cars, we can’t wait for Silverstone.”Rounds 17 and 18 of the Ginetta Junior Championship will take place at Silverstone National Circuit on 27th/28th September. Before then, TCR will be in action at Donington Park next weekend, 13th/14th September, for the finale of the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge season and then at Croft Circuit on 20th/21st September, for the Michelin Clio Cup Race Series championship decider.Provisional 2014 Ginetta Junior Championship Driver Standings (after Rd16):8th Jamie Caroline, 231pts; 13th William Taylforth, 149pts; 14th Matt Chapman, 146ptsProvisional 2014 Ginetta Junior Championship Team Standings (after Rd16):4th Total Control Racing, 403pts
