Caterham Academy Racer Morris Seals Top Three Championship Finish

Caterham Racing Academy driver Seb Morris wrapped-up a top three championship finish in the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup (NEC) at the Nurburgring in Germany on Sunday, 21st September, to cap off a particularly impressive second half of the season in style.Debuting on the European stage this year in the ultra-competitive NEC category, the 18-year-old Fortec Motorsport driver made a huge impact against incredibly tough opposition and concludes the campaign with a tally of two race victories and three other podiums. Although three races were scheduled for the finale, Sunday’s race had to be cancelled due to heavy fog at the German track.Seb started the weekend superbly on Friday, 19th September, with an excellent second place finish in the opening encounter and went on to add sixth position in race two on Saturday, 20th September, to move into third in the standings – overturning a 15 point deficit prior to the Nurburgring event. In five seasons of car racing, the Jack Wills ‘Young Briton’, TAG Heuer ambassador, Oxford Vaughan ambassador and Elite Cymru-backed racer has an enviable record of three championship wins, the runner-up spot in BRDC Formula 4 last year and now third overall in his first season in Europe.“Obviously I’d have liked to have won the championship but considering where we were mid-season, to come back to third in the standings is pretty amazing from both me and the team”, said the rapid Marford teenager, “I think I’ve been the top points scorer out of any of the drivers since Assen, it’s nice to end the season well and to have made a big impact over the last few races.“Everyone remembers how you finish a season and a championship, so hopefully that will stand us in good stead for next year. I’d like to carry on in single-seaters and move up the ladder but we need to raise the budget to make that happen so the hard work starts now. I’d like to say a huge thank you to my fantastic sponsors for this year and, of course, to Caterham.”Race one of the weekend on Friday was the rescheduled encounter from the previous event at Most – which had to be postponed due to heavy rainfall – and Seb lined-up on the second row of the grid. Making a great start, he climbed into third place and then set about applying pressure to Kevin Jorg before passing the Swiss driver on lap three.Immediately pulling clear of Jorg, Seb set his sights on race leader Andrea Pizzitola but with the pair very evenly matched the Welshman had to settle for a nonetheless impressive second place finish on lap 13 – over five seconds clear of the chasing pack.Qualifying sixth fastest for race two on Saturday, 20th September, Seb made a good launch and with overtaking at an absolute premium, the key challenge was to keep Steijn Schothorst behind him for the duration – which he achieved. In doing so, Seb secured the crucial one point advantage on his rival which ultimately proved decisive in the championship.Finishing in the coveted top three in the standings also brings another reward: “For the top three finish I have been awarded a test day in a Formula Renault 3.5 ‘World Series by Renault’ car and I am really looking forward to utilising that, hopefully it’ll be a taster of things to come!”, added Seb.Final 2014 Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup (NEC) Standings:3rd Seb Morris, 224pts
