Double Podium For Albert On Opening Weekend Of Winter Series‏

SWR Caterham F1 Driver Development Programme Team celebrated a brace of podium results for teenager Jordan Albert during the opening event of the BRDC Formula 4 Winter Championship at a rain-hit Snetterton 300 Circuit over the weekend, 8th/9th November.Racing to top three finishes in rounds two and four of the eight-race campaign, it could so easily have been a hat-trick of podiums for Albert but an unfortunate excursion while running in third place in round three proved costly. Ending the weekend sixth in the points standings, had the 18-year-old converted a top three result in race three he would have been third in the championship.Mexican team-mate Fernando Urrutia, for whom the weekend marked his BRDC F4 debut as well as his maiden race outing in the UK, improved markedly throughout and delivered some very strong performances, culminating in a best finish of seventh place during the final encounter on Sunday.“Fernando had a massive learning curve this weekend”, said team owner Sean Walkinshaw, “He’s fresh over from Mexico this weekend, the first time he’s seen the car, he’d never seen the track and he’d never driven in the wet before – he really did a great job. He got quicker and quicker and we’re looking forward to Brands now in a couple of weeks, he’ll be even stronger there.“It’s obviously great to get a couple of podiums with Jordan, he raced well and was really unlucky in the first race on Sunday. He’d just got third but a couple of corners later he came off the brakes to unlock a locked wheel and it took him off onto the grass. It was touch and go whether the car would be repaired for the last race but the team did a fantastic job to get him out there.”Qualifying fourth for the opening race on Saturday in a damp but drying session, Albert got away from the line cleanly but was edged back a position to fifth on lap one. Running comfortably, the British driver remained fifth on the road but was elevated into fourth on corrected times on lap three when Gaetano di Mauro was given a 10 second penalty for a false start.By the end of lap six, di Mauro had managed to move back ahead on the timing screens due to slightly faster lap times but then, on the 10th and final tour, Albert himself was hit with a five second penalty having been adjudged to have exceeded track limits. He therefore finished in sixth place.Urrutia, making his BRDC Formula 4 debut, began the first round in eighth position before moving into seventh on lap two. On lap seven, though, a tangle with Enzo Bortoleto resulted in a visit to the pits and, after rejoining, Urrutia ended his maiden encounter in eighth place.Lining-up fifth on the grid for round two, Albert made a great start but was prevented from making the most of it with cars blocking the way. Even so, he managed to break into the top four and then started to turn up the heat on third placed Connor Jupp who he passed for third on the ninth tour at the exit of Riches – securing his second career podium in BRDC F4.Team-mate Urrutia began round two from seventh on the grid but was shuffled back to eighth place on the opening lap. Remaining there throughout the 10 lap contest, the Mexican chalked up his second successive top eight result on his first day of racing in Britain.Heavy overnight rain, and continued rainfall on Sunday morning, led to a very challenging round three qualifying session in which Albert was sixth fastest – having had his best time disallowed for a perceived track limits infringement – while Urrutia was ninth. The first of Sunday’s races began on a wet track and Albert made a terrific getaway to climb into the top four. Urrutia, meanwhile, was actually eighth on the grid, due to Enzo Bortoleto not starting the race, and due to a time penalty for Jupp the Mexican was classified in seventh into lap two.Unfortunately for Urrutia, a spin on the second tour at Agostini led to retirement and also resulted in the deployment of the Safety Car. At the re-start, Albert judged everything perfectly and ran tight to the tail of Zubair Hoque over the line before grabbing third place at Riches. Dramatically, though, Albert’s race was run two corners later after his unfortunate lock-up at Oggies.Determined to bounce back in round four after missing out on another podium earlier in the day, Albert did just that by claiming an excellent top three finish in the final race of the weekend after a tremendous drive from seventh on the grid.Making a terrific start, the Briton rocketed into the top four on the opening lap and set about piling on the pressure to Rodrigo Fonseca. Making the breakthrough on lap three, Albert then saw off his pursuers before comfortably sealing his third career podium in BRDC Formula 4 by seven seconds.Urrutia started well to move up from eighth to seventh place, but an unfortunate moment on lap three dropped the Mexican to ninth. Gaining a place on the fifth tour, Urrutia then became involved in a sensational battle with Bortoleto over seventh position. After five laps of great wheel-to-wheel action, Urrutia sealed the place on the penultimate tour to chalk-up his best result of the weekend.Rounds five to eight of the BRDC Formula 4 Winter Championship will take place a fortnight from now, over the weekend 22nd/23rd November, at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent.2014 BRDC Formula 4 Winter Championship Standings (after Rd4):6th Jordan Albert, 65pts; 8th Fernando Urrutia, 41pts
