Powerboat and jet ski racers gearing up for 5-round national championships with record crowds expected
P1 has unveiled its UK race calendar for this year which will see its SuperStock and AquaX series racing at five venues from May to September.The announcement of a 50-race powerboat and jet ski series around the UK coast, together with a similar race programme in the USA, confirms P1’s position as the world’s leading marine motorsport brand.
“The growth of P1, as it develops into becoming a genuine global motorsport, involves delivering high calibre events that generate significant levels of inward economic investment at host venues, together with the commercial platform created for sponsors, partners and the wider marine industry” explains P1 chief operating officer Robert Wicks. “The coming season will be a great mix of established venues and an exciting new location” says Wicks “with our double bill of fast, furious and free to watch racing making its first visit to North Yorkshire for the opening event.”
A fleet of ten P1 Panther race boats and more than forty jet ski riders will head to Scarborough’s South Bay at the end of May, where the West Pier and harbour areas will be a provide good vantage points for the thousands of spectators who will be able to meet the powerboat teams and AquaX riders over the weekend of family entertainment.The action moves to the Hampshire coast for the second round at Stokes Bay in Gosport, before returning to Yorkshire for the P1 Hull Grand Prix of the Sea. This will be the fifth successive year that Hull has hosted the P1 series on the challenging waters of the Humber. Wicks said: “The race location at Hull Marina offers some of the best viewing for fans, and with the backdrop of The Deep and the Humber Bridge it’s a venue that all the competitors enjoying visiting each year.”Last year’s flagship event in Cardiff, which attracted more than 40,000 spectators, moves to the bank holiday weekend at the end of August and the successful Bournemouth Grand Prix becomes the season finale as part of a major beach festival. “More than 150,000 spectators will attend our five UK race weekends” added Wicks “and all the action will again be screened on Sky Sports and Motors TV.”
The P1 race season will be launched at an exhibition event at London’s Royal Docks on 8 May.
