NEW British Speedway Chairman Keith Chapman believes fixed racenights in the UK are essential for the future of British Speedway. Many debates have been staged over the years regarding the UK racing schedule and after working with a number of top stars as owner of King’s Lynn, Chapman is adamant a clearer calendar would benefit the sport immensely.Said Chapman: “For me, securing fixed racenights in the UK is crucial for the future of the sport.
People will mention that there’s a large number of clubs who don’t actually own their stadium. However, if you plan things properly and give these other people plenty of notice then I’m sure the majority would bend over backwards to ensure their racing could continue.“If we could set two racenights so that riders and the general public knew that this is when speedway was taking place in the UK then I think the sport in this country would benefit in the long run.“I’m pretty sure something like that would attract some of the top riders from around the world back to racing in the UK and strengthen the product of our top leagues once again.“Not only that, but it would also help all British riders who aspire to ride abroad as they could have a much more clear schedule.
“From a supporters perspective as well, they’d be a lot more sure of who was racing when and if the top riders were back in the UK then I’m sure we’d see an increase in crowds across the leagues too.“This is one thing I feel needs to be looked at properly, I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, but this could be one way of getting British Speedway back on the right track.”
