Castle Combe spectators and drivers benefit local charities

£50k from Castle Combe Charity Givers

Spectators and drivers have generated close to £50k for mainly locally based charities at race meetings and other events at the Castle Combe Circuit this year.

The circuit has always been keen to assist local worthwhile causes, its long standing car boot sales generating over £200k for charities and causes in and around Castle Combe since their introduction by circuit owner Howard Strawford in 1989. This year’s gate receipts exceeded £9k.

This year, track days organised by Christopher Darwin from Devon, generated over £20k alone, with £5250 of that donated to the Forever Friends appeal at the Bath Royal United Hospital. Track days are open to anyone wishing to experience circuit driving with their own car, the range of machinery varying from Morris Minors to Maseratis. Since 2003, Darwin track days at Castle Combe have raised over £76k for various charities.

Charity collections are also made at the circuit’s ten race meetings each year, whilst the circuit’s themed ‘Action Days’ where anyone can drive a few laps of the circuit, feature various fund raising activities, which this year generated around £5k.

The circuit’s latest event, the Stroke Association Supercar Saturday on October 31, which featured many drivers from the circuit’s championships donating charity rides in their cars, generated £11,072 for the Bristol based division of the Association.

Graham Marshallsay, M.D. of Castle Combe circuit said, “It’s very satisfying to see such an amazing total now we have more or less come to the end of our year’s activities. It’s a bit of a tradition here at Castle Combe and something we intend to continue. Let’s hope next year is even better and we can help yet more people. But big thanks must go the fund raisers and those who have donated. It’s amazing how all these donations add up to create a really worthwhile figure.”
