Trident GP2 Bahrain Sprint review

Raffaele Marciello cruised to another points finish for Trident at Al Sakhir. In the Sprint Race held by the GP2 Series at the Bahrain venue, the Aci Team Italia member crossed the line in fifth place, capping a solid overall performance. Daniel De Jong also experienced a positive race. Although he was forced to start from the back of the pack and a contact cost him valuable time on-track, he managed to fight back to 14th place thanks to his good tire management skills. The Trident team and drivers are now already preparing for the final round of the GP2 Series, scheduled for the coming weekend at Abu Dhabi. The series will be on-track as soon as Friday, November 27th, at the Yas Marina venue.

11 - RAFFAELE MARCIELLO

Lining-up on the third row, Marciello delivered a good start but lost positions throughout the opening lap, dropping back to sixth place. In the first few laps, he battled hard to improve his position and defend from the cars he had behind, but eventually decided to reduce his pace in order to manage the tire wear. Nonetheless, he was often among the fastest men on-track, and some good passes promoted him to fourth place, just shy of a potential podium finish. During the last lap though, the driver he had behind, thanks to a better tire situation, dropped him to fifth with just a few corners to go. Although bitter for having missed a good shot for the podium, he’s determined to get back in the hunt for significant results in the upcoming round at Abu Dhabi. 12 - DANIEL DE JONG

De Jong knew that today’s race would have been all about the strategy and tire management. The Dutchman started really well from the 19th place and, lap after lap, quickly moved up the towards the middle of the pack. At the re-start from the safety-car situation though, he was rear-ended by one of the cars he had behind and that dropped him to the back of the pack again. With a patient and consistent run, De Jong went back to his previous pace and took full advantage of the tire wear issues that plagued some of the drivers out front. He eventually made it back to P14 by the end of the race. As a consequence, De Jong can be satisfied of what he accomplished in his comeback weekend, as the experience will definitely be useful next weekend at Abu Dhabi.
