End of an ERA as AsiaCup gives way to Formula 4 South East Asia

Created in 2013 to help bridge the gap between karting and single-seater formula racing cars, following three successful seasons, the AsiaCup Series now makes way for the newly-created Formula 4 South East Asia Championship.

The final event at the Sepang International Circuit in December saw 16-year-old Jordan Love crowned the overall champion. The Australian ace joins an elite class of former champions from both AsiaCup and AsiaCup Super6 which include compatriot Jake Parsons (AsiaCup Champion 2014), Malaysian Daniel Adam Woodroof (AsiaCup Malaysian Champion 2013), South African Matthew Swanepoel (AsiaCup Champion 2013) and Indian Arjun Maini (AsiaCup Super 6 Champion 2013). Love’s emphatic season saw him record a near-perfect campaign with 14 wins from the 15 races contested and his efforts were rewarded with a special preview test of the brand new Formula 4 South East Asia Championship race car.

Jordan Love, 2015 AsiaCup Series and AsiaCup Super 6 Overall Champion: “It has been an incredible 2015 season for me, and to come away with the overall title in the final AsiaCup Series is especially memorable. I also set the fastest lap record in the three seasons of the AsiaCup Series which is something I will never forget. The best moment for me was the chance to shake down the new Formula 4 South East Asia car. I’m thankful for everything I have learned, the knowledge and experience I have gained from the crew and Meritus.GP. Now that Formula 4 South East Asia will replace the AsiaCup Series from August 2016, I hope more young drivers will get the opportunity to realise their dreams of making racing their career.”

Peter Thompson, Chairman, Asian Autosport Action Group (Triple A): “The end of the AsiaCup Series marks a poignant moment in our history as we look forward to promoting the brand new FIA-certified Formula 4 South East Asia Championship. We are extremely proud to have had a hand in the development of young racing talent across the region, some of whom will return to compete in the Formula 4 South East Asia Championship in its inaugural season.”

Managed by Malaysian company Asian Autosport Action Group, Formula 4 South East Asia is designed as a FIA single-organisation championship to ensure a cost-effective transition for young drivers to progress into formula racing. As the only one of its kind in the region, this entry-level single-seater formula will become an important boost for driver development in South East Asia.
