Motors TV UK Weekend Highlights 8,9 October

Here at the High Speed Television channel, we’re aware that for the select group of you out there who identify as fans of motocross, the autumn and winter months can be a difficult time of year. With the regular World Championship season over by September, there is a paucity of two-wheeled dirt racing on show, but that’s where the SMX Riders and Manufacturer’s Cup steps in. Like Take That and a short-on-cash Robbie Williams, all the biggest names from the MXGP tour will be getting back together for one last hurrah at the Veltins Arena in Germany, with each of the seven manufacturers entering a team of four riders, all fighting to get their hands on a rather attractive €50,000 cheque.

That’s not the only prize on offer this weekend, with the 19th annual Petit Le Mans at Road America bringing the curtain down on the 2016 IMSA Sportscar Championship, where plenty of questions are still to be answered. Could Christina Nielsen become the first female to win a top-flight US sportscar championship in GTD? Could Ford cap their first season back by denying Corvette the GTLM title? Would Starworks become the first team to break CORE Autosport’s stranglehold on LMPC? And could Dane Cameron and Eric Curran avenge their final round defeat by Action Express team-mates Christina Fittipaldi and Joao Barbosa last year in the final appearance for the Daytona Prototypes?

We pride ourselves on variety at the High Speed Channel and when the high-tech Super Formula single-seater championship and the British Autograss Series are put side by side, variety is exactly what you get. While the Honda and Toyota-powered rocketships battle to be the pride of Japan at the 2.3 mile Sugo circuit, at the other end of the spectrum, ten different classes of bonkers Minis, Fiestas, Saxos and buggies compete on rugged off-road courses around the UK – proof that motorsport isn’t the exclusive domain of energy drink companies just yet.

To finish off, we’ve got a triple-header of GT racing action, starting with the head-to-head showdown for the GT Masters title between the Land Racing Audi and new-for-2016 Callaway Corvette C7 R GT3. Audi factory driver Christopher Mies and California kid Connor de Philippi have been a measure of consistency thus far and have a slim two point lead, despite only winning once. Daniel Keilwitz and Jules Gounon’s tally of three victories in the throaty Corvette is only bettered by the Team 75 Bernhard Porsche of Kevin Estre and David Jahn, although they are out of the title fight after a sluggish start to the year.

There will be plenty more Porsches in action in the Carrera Cup France, which heads across the border to Italy and the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari – otherwise known as Imola. The beautiful park is a driver’s favourite, but Mathieu Jaminet won’t have time to enjoy the scenery. After coming up two points short last year, can he put the title beyond Joffrey De Narda with a round to spare?

Then finally it’s over to South Korea and the Audi R8 LMS Cup Asia, where reigning double champion Alex Yoong will hope to shake off his rival Alessio Picariello. The young Belgian earned plaudits from Edoardo Mortara for their battle in Sepang and impressed on his first outing in the Blancpain championship, but how will he fare against the top names in Asia?
