The FIA TGP Championship has long held the ambition to return to Brands Hatch to race England’s iconic Grand Prix circuit with the legendary F1 cars of yesteryear. To that end, TGP has been actively campaigning Brands’ management – current and past – to get the necessary activities under way to develop the grand prix 'loop' and revive the circuit’s past glories.
MSV and Jonathan Palmer’s arrival at the helm of Brands Hatch heralded the much-awaited positive steps. Speaking in ‘Motorsport’ in 2004, Palmer stated his wish to get TGP back on the Grand Prix circuit. Now, TGP are pleased to announce that the world’s premier historic Grand Prix championship will return to race on the GP circuit at Brands Hatch as a support event to the inaugural A1 GP series event on September 25th 2005.
"We’re pleased to have been driving the case forward for the renewal of the Grand Prix circuit licence at Brands Hatch," says Oli McCrudden – TGP Championship Co-ordinator. "It’s a circuit that drivers and spectators love. It’s got that magic and character that’s comparable to Spa & Monza and to have our iconic cars out racing on such a famous circuit has been our goal for some time now."
TGP last raced at Brands in 2002 when the race was held on the short, 'Indy' circuit due to the FIA regulations restricting TGP races to circuits with class 2 track licenses (for F3000 level etc). "It made a very exciting spectacle but driver’s tended to get a little dizzy…" says McCrudden.
"To be part of the inaugural A1 GP event is another honour for TGP. We were at the first Bahrain GP in 2004 to introduce the heritage and excitement of classic grand prix racing to the fans. Now we’ll have the chance to give the UK’s motorsport fans at the A1 GP event the chance to see Lotus, McLaren, Williams, Ferraris, Tyrrell, March, Arrows, Surtees and many more GP cars all battling away at Brands."
The A1 GP Series sees identical cars being competed for national teams. The UK effort is lead by former world champion – on two wheels and four – John Surtees, who will have a chance to be reunited with some of his old cars that he designed and raced and that are now competing in TGP.
