commanding drive from rising Welsh rally driver
Welsh Rally team GEMsport reinforced its position as one of the most impressive new teams in the rallying world with a resounding Fiesta win in last weekend’s Swansea Bay Rally.
It was 19 year old Elfyn Evans who was once again popping the champagne cork after his second Fiesta win in a row – giving him a commanding lead in the 2008 FiestaSporting Trophy.
There was also useful points haul for team mate Meilyr Evans who is contesting the series for the first time this year. He finished fifth overall in the Fiestas after a steady run to ensure that both cars returned to the finish in Swansea.
But the win was not without its dramas for the son of former British Rally Champion Gwyndaf Evans.
Elfyn and co-driver Gareth Roberts rolled the hustings.com Fiesta on a slippery section in Resolven. “We certainly ensured the GEMsport guys had plenty to do when we arrived at service,’’ said Elfyn.
“They did a great job to get us back out without penalty and a fastest Fiesta time on the final stage gave us our second win after the recent Severn Valley success.’’
The team heads back to Ireland next month for the Ulster Rally and the Cork 20 in September before a return to the gravel in October for the McRae Stages in Scotland.
