Sarah Moore regains her lead in the Ginetta Junior Championship with Henderson Insurance at Silverstone, but it is a slender one, as the series heads to Rockingham this weekend.
Ever since Sarah Moore won her first Ginetta Junior Championship with Henderson Insurance race at Thruxton in April, she has been the benchmark driver in the series. She won three races in a row – two at Thruxton and one at Donington – but then her season faded just a little. However, a superb drive at Silverstone has put her championship attack back on track and she heads to Rockingham just two points clear of the opposition.
With four races to go, however, the season is building up for a thrilling climax: Sarah heads Jake Cook by just two points and Jake has bagged more wins. He won both Brands Hatch races in April but then had a whack to his confidence at Thruxton when he qualified badly and struggled to make progress in the races. The fact that he is second in the championship is remarkable when one considers he was docked 20 points for his part in an accident at Oulton Park. But for that, he’d be clear in the race for the crown. Snetterton in August was a turning point, though: he took two wins in Norfolk to rebuild his mental state and followed that up by a brace of wins at Knockhill. A further victory at Silverstone made it five in a row...
Don’t think that this is a two-horse race, however. Aaron Williamson is just 16 points away from leader Moore (having secured three wins this year) and Oulton Park winner Alex Austin is fourth, 35 points behind Sarah. Any one of these four could take the spoils and that is the beauty of the Ginetta Junior Championship with Henderson Insurance - it is wide open.
Chris Swanwick has run at the front this season and although a second place is his best result, he has
Secured four pole positions to illustrate his pace. Jake Hill, whose participation is budget-driven, won at Croft and has been quick in his part-season, while David Moore (brother of Sarah) has looked good in his first year of car racing having had no karting experience.
With packed grids and close racing, the 1400cc Ginetta G20s have been a hugely popular part of the BTCC-support bill this year. Stars of the future they may be, but they are stars of today as well. Let battle commence!
