British Speedway Weekly Bulletin

BIG EVENT LATEST... EDDIE Kennett is determined to make another wildcard appearance in the British Grand Prix - but first he has to get through his British Semi-Final at King's Lynn on Wednesday, May 12. Kennett has had a stuttering start to the season with Coventry but feels he has what it takes to make it to the Millennium Stadium on July 10. He needs to finish in the top eight at the Norfolk Arena event before heading to Wolverhampton for the British Final on June 14. And if he is the highest placed non-GP rider in that meeting he will be heading for South Wales and the biggest Speedway event in the world. "It's something I am determined to do," said Kennett. "I know what it's like to ride at Cardiff and the atmosphere is amazing, I want more of the same. "It's interesting that they've brought in Semi-Finals, the top eight is what it's all about and it's a while since I've raced at King's Lynn but I'll be ready for it. "We've been working on things to try and improve the set-up and I feel I'm making progress in terms of getting things right now. Hopefully it won't be too long before me and Coventry are back to our best." Current Grand Prix star Chris Harris, who enjoyed a good opening round in Poland, is included in the King's Lynn meeting which marks the launch of his British title defence. But there will be plenty of competition from the vastly experienced Lee Richardson, who is currently without a British club and will be determined to lift the British title to make a point to British promoters. Joe Haines, who recently suffered a shoulder injury, has had laser treatment with Brian Simpson and has vowed to race in the meeting at his home track. KING'S LYNN SEMI-FINAL LINE-UP: Lee Richardson (Unattached), Chris Harris (Coventry), Simon Stead (Swindon), Lewis Bridger (Peterborough), James Grieves (Glasgow), Paul Clews (Berwick), Leigh Lanham (Newport and Belle Vue), Adam Roynon (Workington), Chris Schramm (Workington), Joe Haines (King's Lynn and Wolverhampton), Ben Wilson (Redcar), Paul Hurry (Lakeside), Chris Neath (Rye House), Jason King (Newcastle), Carl Wilkinson (Scunthorpe), Eddie Kennett (Coventry). ELITE LEAGUE LATEST... BELLE VUE boss Chris Morton felt his side deserved more from a 59-36 defeat at Poole on Monday, completing a southern tour of three matches from which the Aces were unable to add to their Elite League total. Morton, speaking on Sky Sports, said: "I think we put up a reasonable fight. We've come along to learn what's going on here, and clearly Poole are very strong at the moment. "It went wrong in the final few heats, but our lads were fighting hard and I think we've learnt quite a bit. There's a long way to go yet." COVENTRY manager Alun Rossiter was left to rue the Bees' inconsistency from the start in their Bank Holiday Monday defeat at local rivals Wolverhampton. Rossiter said: "It was the same old story, we weren't gating again, and you can't give people like Lindgren and Woffinden head-starts in this game. "It's a shame because I don't believe any of them are bad riders, but I can't put my finger on what the problem is, although obviously we've got to do something." EASTBOURNE reserve Ricky Kling kept up his stunning run of form with a six-ride paid maximum in the Eagles' impressive win over Belle Vue - signing off by taking the prized scalps of Hans Andersen and Peter Karlsson in the last race. Kling told The Argus: "I came back in from Heat 14 and they said to me, 'do you want Heat 15 or a maximum?' I said, 'I want heat 15 AND a maximum.'  "I hadn't raced against their best riders. I could have stayed on my maximum and it looks good. But even if I'd gone away with a paid maximum from my first five rides, it wasn't the challenge I wanted."  IPSWICH co-promoter Chris Louis has confirmed the club are keen to sign doubling-up rider Linus Sundstrom on a full-time basis when he steps up to the Elite League. Louis, speaking in the Evening Star, said: "I think Linus is the most accomplished rider I've seen since Tony Rickardsson. Since Tony rode here, only Hans Andersen has compared with him in terms of ability and set-up. "We know how good Linus is, and I can assure Ipswich fans we will be doing everything in our power to persuade him Ipswich is the club for him when he steps up." LAKESIDE recovered from their mauling at Poole to put three more points on the board with a 54-40 victory over Belle Vue at Purfleet. Reserve Daniel Davidsson enjoyed a night to remember as he dropped just one point from six rides, which compensated for problems for his brother Jonas - whilst Adam Shields and Kauko Nieminen were also in double figures for the Hammers. PETERBOROUGH boss Trevor Swales felt the absence of reserve Krzysztof Buczkowski was the key factor in the Panthers' 50-43 defeat at Ipswich on Monday. The Polish rider has undergone surgery after breaking a bone in his foot over the weekend, and intends to be back for the trip to Belle Vue next week. Swales said: "We missed Krzysztof badly - I'm sure we would have won with him in the side." POOLE moved into a 12-point lead at the top of the Elite League table with a 59-36 win over Belle Vue on Monday - following on from their mammoth 70-24 victory against Lakeside. Team boss Neil Middleditch told Sky Sports: "The result doesn't tell the story because there was great racing and I'd told the boys beforehand that Belle Vue would give us a tough test. The three 5-1s towards the end certainly flattered us a bit more." SWINDON manager Ronnie Russell has given his backing to his current line-up in the wake of a disappointing defeat at his former club Lakeside. Russell told Speedway Star: "We will persevere with what we are doing at the moment but we wouldn't be able to run indefinitely with a situation that doesn't settle down. "We would have to look for changes but that is something I don't want to do and have no intention at this stage of doing." WOLVERHAMPTON skipper Tai Woffinden was part of an impressive all-round team effort which saw off Coventry on Monday - and he then underlined that the Monmore men expect to gain in strength as the season continues. Woffinden said: "It looks to me as though we're getting better and better as a team as the weeks go by and we have to keep that going throughout the season. "Peter Adams keeps telling us it's all about getting into the top four and how good we can be in September and October, not what we are doing now. We need to time our form like we did last year although obviously Poole are the team everyone is talking about." PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST... BERWICK'S early-season injury victim Lee Complin has had the cast from his broken arm removed, although no timescale has yet been put on his return. Promoter John Anderson said: "Lee can now begin the process of rebuilding the muscles in his forearm as well as helping knit the broken bones. He is still some way off making a return to the side, but at least he is on the mend and there is light a the end of the tunnel." BIRMINGHAM maintained their 100 per cent home record with comfortable home wins over Glasgow and Berwick - scoring 60 against the Bandits despite being held to 18-18 after six races. Manager Graham Drury said: "We had a good second half to the meeting against Berwick. Some fans asked if I'd had a word with the lads but I don't need to, they know when they need to do better. I'm a happy man right now." EDINBURGH star Ryan Fisher enjoyed two productive evenings with a maximum at Redcar and 11-points against Sheffield, dropping his only points with a first-ride disqualification. Fisher said: "Even though I started off with a zero (against Sheffield), I made up for it later on. I'm enjoying my speedway right now and every year I'm getting better and better." GLASGOW manager Stewart Dickson was satisfied with his team's efforts at Birmingham, where a superb showing by Travis McGowan saw the Tigers reach 40 points against the in-form Brummies. Dickson said: "I don't suspect that they will lose too many meetings this season but overall we did compete pretty well. As soon as we can get back to a full seven man team then I suspect that will take a little strain off the reserves, and that is an area where we are not quite as competitive as I would like." KING'S LYNN face Glasgow in the Knockout Cup on Wednesday in what has become a first-leg tie - looking to launch their bid to win the trophy for a fifth time in six years. Team boss Rob Lyon said: "We cannot afford any slip-ups this Wednesday. We will once again use Ty Proctor as a guest replacement for Tomas (Topinka) after he did such a brilliant job for us last week, and hopefully we can build up a big a lead to take into the second leg which will be arranged for some time in the near future." NEWCASTLE No.1 Kenni Larsen paid tribute to the Diamonds' track staff after recording a full maximum in Monday's 66-26 demolition of Newport, completing a weekend double over the South Wales side. Larsen said: "We deserved this big win tonight as we all pulled together but the track was the best I've ever ridden here in Newcastle since I joined, which really helps. I hope we will be able to ride more like this for the rest of the season." NEWPORT endured a troublesome Bank Holiday weekend, with double defeat at the hands of Newcastle, first going down 46-44 in an eventful clash at the Hayley Stadium on Sunday. Kim Nilsson won four races out of five in the home encounter, but the Wasps were blown away in the North-East and lost 66-26 with home riders winning all 15 races. REDCAR will have Jitendra Duffill in charge for the first time in a home meeting when they face Glasgow on Thursday, as promoter Brian Havelock concentrates on his other jobs at the club. Havelock said: "I am very busy with the day to day management of the club and on the raceday itself I am pulled in several directions before I even set off to the pits to look after the riders. So I am pleased that Jitendra has agreed to take on the team management role and allow me to concentrate on other matters on a Thursday evening." RYE HOUSE reserve Kyle Hughes is determined to take his place in the Rockets' Knockout Cup tie against Edinburgh this weekend. Hughes had feared a fractured right foot when he tangled with Michal Makovsky during Monday's win over Berwick - but X-rays revealed just tissue damage, and Hughes is keen to resume against the Monarchs. SCUNTHORPE have signed former Berwick rider Tero Aarnio to fill the gap in their team left by broken back victim Joel Parsons, and the Finn will make his debut on Friday against King's Lynn. Manager Richard Hollingsworth said: "We know he likes our track, he is a real racer, which you need to be to score points on our track and he's a pleasant young man who should fit well into the club. He's committed to racing in the U.K. and has some decent equipment in place so we are very pleased to be signing him." SHEFFIELD promoter David Hoggart is hoping that home stars Ricky Ashworth, Richard Hall and Josh Auty can all progress when the club stages the British Semi-Final at Owlerton on Thursday. Hoggart said: "It would be no major surprise to see all three Sheffield riders reaching the British Final, which would be a major honour for the club. All three are capable of winning races against top quality opposition on this track and the competition will be very intense for sure." SOMERSET will hand a debut to Czech Republic star Lubos Tomicek in their home clash with Workington on Friday as they rebuild following the departures of Steve Boxall and Brent Werner. Rebels promoter Debbie Hancock said: "I think he will do a great job down here at the Oak Tree Arena. In Mario Jirout we have already had a No 1 Czech here at Somerset, that being back in 2002 and if Lubos can do half the job that Mario did during his season with Somerset, then I am sure that we will be on to a winner." STOKE promoter Dave Tattum felt his side hadn't enjoyed the rub of the green in their 57-35 defeat at Workington, from which the Comets took 5-1s in the last three races to make the score more emphatic. Tattum said: "Taylor (Poole) and Richard (Hall) have gone really well tonight and deserved more as did Ricky Wells who put in another much improved performance. But it was not enough and we've left here with nothing. I felt both Taylor and Richard were harshly disqualified for first bend falls." WORKINGTON recorded their fourth win in succession with victory over Stoke on Monday, the stars of the show being reserves Craig Cook and John Branney who were paid for 29 points between them. Manager Ian Thomas said: "I am very pleased with the win but we made hard work of it during the first few races where we only had one heat winner. But I cannot remember any team's reserve pairing scoring 29 points." NATIONAL LEAGUE action continues and you can find all relevant news, reports and other information in the NL section on www.speedwaygb.com FIXTURE PICTURE... FRIDAY MAY 7: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Lakeside v Ipswich 8pm PREMIER LEAGUE: Scunthorpe v King's Lynn 7.30, Somerset v Workington 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP 1st leg: Edinburgh v Rye House 7.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE: Plymouth v Buxton 7.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP 2nd leg: Weymouth v Isle of Wight 7.15  SATURDAY MAY 8: PREMIER LEAGUE: Workington v Redcar 7pm PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP 1st leg: Berwick v Newport 7pm, 2nd leg: Rye House v Edinburgh 7pm NATIONAL LEAGUE: Newport v King's Lynn 2.30  SUNDAY MAY 9: PREMIER LEAGUE: Stoke v Workington 5pm PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP 1st leg: Newcastle v Scunthorpe 6.30, Newport v Berwick 2.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP 2nd leg: Mildenhall v Buxton 4pm  MONDAY MAY 10: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Belle Vue v Peterborough 7.30, Swindon v Coventry 7.30, Wolverhampton v Lakeside 7.30 TUESDAY MAY 11: NATIONAL LEAGUE: Dudley v Mildenhall (at Wolverhampton) 7.30  WEDNESDAY MAY 12: BRITISH SEMI-FINAL: King's Lynn 7.30 SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Poole v Ipswich 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Birmingham v Edinburgh 7.30  THURSDAY MAY 13: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Ipswich v Lakeside 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Redcar v Rye House 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP 2nd leg: Sheffield v Birmingham 7.45  FRIDAY MAY 14: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Coventry v Ipswich 8pm, Lakeside v Poole 8pm, Peterborough v Wolverhampton 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Edinburgh v King's Lynn 7.30, Somerset v Sheffield 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP 2nd leg: Scunthorpe v Newcastle 7.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE: Plymouth v Newport 7.30  SATURDAY MAY 15: PREMIER LEAGUE: Berwick v King's Lynn 7pm, Rye House v Sheffield 7pm, Stoke v Somerset 7.30, Workington v Newport 7pm DAVID NORRIS FAREWELL: Eastbourne 7.30  SUNDAY MAY 16: PREMIER LEAGUE: Glasgow v Newport 4pm, Newcastle v Redcar 6.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE: Buxton v Isle of Wight 3pm, King's Lynn v Weymouth 7.30, Mildenhall v Rye House 4pm, Newport v Scunthorpe 2.30 MONDAY MAY 17: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Belle Vue v Poole 7.30, Wolverhampton v Peterborough 7.30  TUESDAY MAY 18: NATIONAL LEAGUE: Isle of Wight v King's Lynn 7.30 WEDNESDAY MAY 19: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Poole v Eastbourne 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Birmingham v Scunthorpe 7.30, King's Lynn v Berwick 7.30
