This will be the opening round of the exciting new for 2010 GT Trophy Endurance Series. After the success of the GT Cup Championship, Bute Motorsport were approached by a number of competitors who did not want to do sprint racing and felt that a well organised series of longer ‘Endurance’ type of events would be a welcome addition to the Bute Motorsport calendar. So, Marc Haynes and his team working with MSVR have organised a short series of endurance length races separate to the GT Cup. Two rounds of The GT Trophy will be organised to ‘test the water’ before organising as many as six rounds next season that will hopefully include several overseas events and a range of duration up to possibly 12 hours.
The opening round could not have been held at a more evocative circuit, the historic Brands Hatch GP Circuit and will last two hours. The race will include two mandatory pit stops to allow for refuelling and driver changes if required. The grid will be organised into three groups with each entrant being allocated a group depending on the performance of their car. A system of pit stop handicapping will help equalise performance of the various machines and driver line ups and help ensure a race to the flag. The handicap will work by each entrant being informed of their minimum pit stop duration from pit entry to exit. The time keepers will monitor each cars time in the pit lane with it being the competitor’s responsibility to ensure they get their timing right.
A wonderfully diverse GT grid has been assembled with entries including Corvette, Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, Ginetta, Lotus, Honda, KTM, Venturi and Mosler. Unlike the GT Cup ‘pro’ drivers will be allowed to enter and the handicap system should also help equalise different driver line up combinations to ensure close racing and a tight finish.
With around twenty cars already entered this opening round will test the handicap system and set the benchmark for future rounds of this exciting new series and the organisers welcome driver and team feed back.
