Josef Newgarden finished race one from Istanbul in a solid 10th place, after a superb start andplenty of overtaking saw the American racer move through the field, gaining an impressive 11positions.
Traffic and a number of yellow flags caused chaos for Newgarden in qualifying, leaving him to startfrom 21st on the grid. Getting a fantastic start off the line, Newgarden gained six positions beforereaching the first corner, and despite some speed performance issues, he was determined to climbfurther. Newgarden continued to display his race craft on a circuit he had never raced at before, and finally brought the car across the line to round out the top 10.
Speaking about the weekend so far, Newgarden said: “We’ve been struggling with power and seemto be down on speed. The car feels really good but the time is just not there – the car stops pullinghalf way down the straight and we need to figure out what’s causing the issue. I only managed oneor two clear laps in qualifying, so we really lost out in that session which obviously made the racedifficult - starting from so far back. Hopefully being a little further forward on the grid for tomorrow’srace will give us a better chance of scoring some points – especially if we can solve theperformance issue.”
Race two is scheduled for this morning prior to the Grand Prix, and as per GP3 Seriesregulations, will feature a reverse grid. The first eight finishers in race one will start race two inreverse order, and cars finishing in ninth position and downwards will start in their finishing position– seeing Newgarden start the second race from 10th on the grid.
