Carl Breeze thoroughly dominated the 10th round of the Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup at Oulton Park, Saturday, 5th June, by taking pole position, victory and the fastest lap of the race.
Marking the Total Control Racing driver’s first visit to the Cheshire circuit since a massive accident during the corresponding race meeting last year, Breeze delivered a sensational performance to close to within just two points of championship leader Frank Wrathall.
Leading from lights-to-flag, the Kings Lynn racer was never troubled and looked in complete control throughout the 15 lap duration to win by over five seconds. The result also means he has the chance to produce a repeat performance tomorrow, Sunday, 6th June, during the 11th round as the grid order is determined by the results from this afternoon’s encounter.
Speaking after round 10, Breeze commented: “The TCR guys have given me a fantastic car all weekend, from the off on Friday during testing we were really quick. Obviously, to bounce back like this after what happened at Oulton Park last year is incredible and it’s a fantastic feeling to be standing on the top step of the podium this time and not lying down on a stretcher!”
Ginetta G50 Cup team-mate Joachim Ritter had a less fruitful outing today but certainly not for a lack of trying. Qualifying 11th on the grid, he ran on the fringe of the top 10 during the early stages but at Hislop’s Chicane on lap two, contact to the right-rear of his car resulted in a problem thereafter with turn-in to left-hand corners.
Even so, Ritter fought hard and raced very competitively to maintain his placing on the edge of the top 10. In the end though, a highly unfortunate moment on the final lap dropped him down the order to an eventual finish of 18th position.
Commenting on TCR’s Ginetta G50 Cup fortunes today, team principal Lee Brookes said: “Carl’s really on it this weekend – he’s mustard. We’re absolutely delighted for him to take the win, and to do so with a dominant performance. He really does deserve it after the bad accident last year and it’s impressive he’s been able to come back to Oulton Park so strongly.
“Joachim was unfortunate to have some contact quite early on but he drove well and raced hard as he always does. He’s got nothing to lose tomorrow starting quite a way down the grid so hopefully he’ll be able to have a strong drive through.”
