Flying Dutchman and swift Swiss in galloping Gallardo make toast of competition, keep Sunoco Daytona Challenge drivers off top points. They came, they saw, they conquered.
Peter Kox and Avon Tyres British GT newbie Marc Hayek were assured of causing a stir at Spa-Francochamps in their Reiter Engineering Gallardo and they did just that.
The Kox/Hayek partnership took pole, set the fastest lap – by Kox, a class record of 2:25.863/107.41mph – and seized the lead from the Trackspeed 911 GTR of Ashburn/Westbrook with 15 laps to go of the 56-lap race.
Ashburn/Westbrook took the highest points available in the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge and second place in the race, while Trackspeed teammates Olivers Bryant and Morley came in third.
From Position 8 on the grid, Griffin, in the Mtech Ferrari, took the lead in Lap 11. He held the lead until changing with Cameron in Lap 20 when Westbrook again led the pack.
Griffin remains at No. 4 in the Challenge standings, the highest-placed Avon Tyres British GT driver, on 72 average points.
The number of points separating the drivers in just the Top 10 is clear. Top-placed Vergne (F3) is on 98.13 average points, while 360 Racing’s Terrence Woodward is on 51.25.
Also clear is that the 2011 Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge is closer and more competitively fought than in the inaugural year. Not surprising, really, when one remembers the value of the prize – a chance to win the Rolex 24.
