British Speedway Weekly Round Up
BIG EVENT LATEST... TOP Brit Chris Harris warmed up for the British Final with a stunning performance in the Danish Grand Prix. And 'Bomber' immediately set his sights on defending his British title at Wolverhampton on June 14. The Coventry skipper finished third in the meeting at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen in a big boost for both himself and British racing. It has put him on the verge of a place in the top eight and automatic qualification for the 2011 series. He admitted it was the best night of his career since the amazing win he enjoyed at Cardiff in 2007. He said: "It was my best night since Cardiff for sure - and it's been a long time coming! "I have felt on the pace in the GPs this year and it's just been a few little mistakes which have let me down, but tonight was a good one. "In the final, I made a reasonable start but I got stuck on the inside where I didn't really want to be, but we'll take the third place. "My starts have got better, I've been working on them this year and I've really been concentrating on making them better. I know I can make starts, it's just a case of getting it into my head that I can do it. "The track was a bit tough and a bit tricky at times but it made for some great racing which was good. "Now I want to keep that British title. It means a lot and we'll be going for it at Wolverhampton, but so will 15 other riders!" Harris continues his Grand Prix campaign in Torun at the Polish GP on Saturday, June 19 - and then the big one, Cardiff, on July 10. Fans are also reminded the Premier League Pairs at Somerset takes place the night before the Millennium Stadium date - Friday, July 9. ELITE LEAGUE LATEST... BELLE VUE are keen to bring in a new signing to replace Tobias Kroner, who has decided to take time out of British Speedway. Manager Chris Morton said: "Toby said he had discussed the situation with his team in Germany and felt it was best for himself and Belle Vue that he took a rest from English speedway. He said he had suffered a loss of confidence and, with the problems he had been having, we had to go along with it. "There was no question of us falling out with Toby but he didn't want to carry on. The move to Belle Vue wasn't working out for him and he needed to be able to concentrate on getting things sorted out." COVENTRY star Krzysztof Kasprzak is delighted to have a place back in the Elite League at Brandon and has made a big impression in his early meetings for the club. Kasprzak said: "I felt a bit of pressure before the first match at Ipswich because of it being a new club and new people for me, but I already knew a lot of the boys in the team and most of them are the same age as me. "I'm really pleased that Rosco and the other bosses at the club gave me a chance here, because I wanted to have a club in England and I'm happy to be at Coventry." EASTBOURNE co-promoter Mike Bellerby says his side are in the mood to pull off a big result against runaway leaders Poole at Arlington on Thursday. Bellerby said: "It's a classic isn't it? Eastbourne against the Pirates is always a great fixture for both sides and you can be sure that we shall be doing all we can to halt the march of the current league leaders. "I'm sure many would regard it as something of a major upset if we were to topple the Pirates, but why shouldn't we? If every one of our riders performs as we know they are capable, I'm sure we have every chance of pulling in a good result, one that would certainly provide us with a major boost, I predict it will be a belter." IPSWICH director of speedway Chris Louis insists the Witches still have a chance of challenging for a top-four place this season. Louis told the Evening Star: "Of course we're not making the numbers up. We can't afford to do that. We want to win the Elite League and we did not put together a bad team. "There is no doubt that we have under-achieved but fundamental to that is the fact that we are still getting used to our track changes at Foxhall. With a hungry Ales Dryml in the side now, and with a long way to go we have not given up on reaching the play-offs this year." LAKESIDE boss Jon Cook is frustrated that the Hammers, along with other Elite League clubs, have had to postpone their home fixtures this Friday due to the weekend World Championship qualifiers. Cook told the Hammers' official website: "Having spoken to both Colin Pratt at Coventry and Peter Oakes at Peterborough I know they share our anger with the situation and it's certainly more extreme this year with all the Qualifiers being on the same day and the riders needing to practice with the new silencers. "We had considered running with facilities and, to that end, we had booked both Scott Nicholls and Linus Sundstrom but we were stuck between a rock and a hard place as the feedback we were getting from fans consulted was that they were unlikely to want to support a Hammers select team." PETERBOROUGH boss Trevor Swales was left to rue the continued absence of skipper Niels-Kristian Iversen as the Panthers went down by just seven points at champions Wolverhampton on Monday. Swales said: "Niels spent a year on loan at Wolves and I'm 100% certain we would have beaten them had he been fit. "Wolves have been giving everyone a hiding on their home track and that was the second highest score any visiting side has got this season." POOLE manager Neil Middleditch has praised the way in which big winter signing Darcy Ward has adapted to the Wimborne Road circuit this season. Middleditch said: "I think Darcy has settled in really well and the biggest compliment I can pay to him is that he is very close to matching the master of the inside line, Gary Havelock. "The way Darcy manages to turn in tight and square off the corners is one of the hardest things to do in speedway. There are only a few riders that have can really do it effectively, Havvy is one of the leading components of the art but Darcy has learnt the technique really quickly." SWINDON boss Ronnie Russell regarded Thursday's defeat at Eastbourne as an uncomfortable case of history repeating - as the Robins again surrendered a convincing early lead. Russell told the Swindon Advertiser: "We got off to a comfortable start and even in that we threw a couple of points away. At Coventry we had an 8-1 and tonight it was a 5-1 that encouraged the opposition that they could get back into it. "My plan was to stop us coming away with nothing but this is one of those opportunities where we could and should have come away with more." WOLVERHAMPTON star Freddie Lindgren's high personal standards were evident by the fact that he was disappointed with scoring 13 points from a possible 15 in the win over Peterborough on Monday. Lindgren said: "It's nice for us to win the meeting like we did but I'm disappointed to lose two-points from my own score. Kenneth Bjerre is a great rider, he's in top form and when he makes the start you can't catch him. "I'm pleased for the team obviously, it's a good result, but I wasn't good. I haven't been feeling too well for the last week with a cold and cough, but that's no excuse." PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST... BERWICK skipper Paul Clews is hoping to make the most of his month at reserve - although he doesn't expect it to last for any longer than that! Clews told Speedway Star: "It will feel strange dropping down to reserve because I don't think I have raced in that position since I came to Berwick. I'll probably just settle into the role and then it will be back up again, but that's the way speedway works sometimes." BIRMINGHAM co-promoter Gary Patchett was disappointed with his team's narrow away defeats at Sheffield and Stoke - venues where the Brummies had won twice earlier in the season. Patchett said: "I sincerely hope we haven't left our best form behind in the Premier Trophy and that we didn't peak too soon. Hopefully these two meetings will turn out to be nothing more than a blip and we can hit back immediately." EDINBURGH newcomer Tobias Busch revealed the influence of fellow German Kevin Wolbert had played a major part in his decision to join the Monarchs last week. Busch told The Scotsman: "I have always wanted to come over and ride in Britain. It has always been my desire after seeing how well Kevin has done since he joined Edinburgh last season. I'm so excited that Edinburgh have signed me because I had been looking for a British club since the beginning of the season, but things did not work out. Luckily, it has worked out now." GLASGOW have signed former British Champion Joe Screen and will also include rising Australian talent Nick Morris, already a Tigers asset, from this Wednesday's trip to King's Lynn. They replace a currently injured James Grieves, and Michael Penfold. Screen said: "I so wish that this could have happened around November of last year when it was first mentioned but it was not to be so now that the opportunity has come around again I am delighted. "When I was left out at Wolves my first call was to Glasgow as they had been great to me in the winter and I am a very loyal rider, and although it took a few weeks to get everything sorted, I am delighted it now is and I can get back racing again." KING'S LYNN boss Rob Lyon is wary about the prospect of facing a drastically revised Glasgow team at the Norfolk Arena on Wednesday. Lyon said: "They are a very different team to who visited us last month. Travis (McGowan) and Joe (Screen) are a powerful spearhead, Josh Grajczonek rode like a heat leader here last time so he should provide them good back up and Nick Morris is rumoured to be the new Darcy Ward of British Speedway. We desperately need Linus (Eklof) and our two reserves to pick up their form otherwise this could be another tough meeting." NEWCASTLE boss George English could barely believe that a sequence of mechanical failures conspired against the Diamonds in their narrow away defeat at Workington. English said: "I'm gutted, simple as that. We were on perfect course for another good away win and then four engine failures in Heats 12-15 scuppered our efforts completely and I still cannot believe we failed to get that win. It's unbelievable!" NEWPORT moved into the Premier League's top ten with a convincing win over Berwick at the Hayley Stadium. Skipper Leigh Lanham told the South Wales Argus: "We have suffered this season with a spate of home defeats, and those, coupled with some away losses, mean there was a lot of doom and gloom around the place. But hopefully the bit of form we have now found will help us make further progress." REDCAR stage the Teesside Pairs on Thursday with six partnerships competing over a 15-heat programme, with a six-heat junior challenge match following. Bears boss Brian Havelock said: "Variety is the spice of life and so we present a break from the pressures of league racing. It is a rare opportunity to see the Bears team members actually race against each other and that is always most interesting. Plenty of pride is at stake I can assure you!" RYE HOUSE boss John Sampford says the Rockets must quickly put their Knockout Cup disaster against Edinburgh behind them, having crashed to a 20-point home defeat against the Monarchs. Sampford said: "I very much wish it hadn't happened, but it did. You can't argue with the result; Edinburgh was the better team on the night, as simple as that. We've still got a big month ahead of us. We're only out of one competition, and there are still others to go for." SCUNTHORPE reserve Jerran Hart put in a stunning performance at Glasgow with a 14 (paid 17) score to help the Scorpions to a big away win, ending a disappointing recent run of results. Hart said: "Tonight must be my highest score in the Premier League and it was away from home which is a bonus. I made some really lightning starts tonight and all the team put a good performance in. I think my crash doing the wheelie is going to be the thing they talk about on the forums, but never mind!" SHEFFIELD skipper Paul Cooper is pleased with recent results, as away wins at Redcar and Workington have increased confidence levels at the Owlerton club. Cooper said: "We've had some problems this season but things seem to be coming back together nicely for us and we need to keep it going. We're riding well and there's a bit of confidence in the team, I just need to sort out a few bike problems of my own and I can start contributing more from the reserve position." SOMERSET promoter Debbie Hancock is expecting a classic encounter at the Oak Tree Arena on Friday when Birmingham - including ex-Rebels Steve Johnston and Justin Sedgmen - provide the opposition. She said: "We have had some terrific meetings here already this season, and this Friday's has all the makings of being a real classic, so I would urge all Rebel fans to get along to Friday's match and get behind the team as they look to put one over the Brummies." STOKE star Claus Vissing enjoyed the winning feeling back at Loomer Road as the Potters overcame Birmingham in his first home meeting since rejoining the club. Vissing said: "I've really enjoyed it tonight and it's good to be back and see the side winning against a team like Birmingham because it shows we can beat anyone on our day. On a personal note I was trying to find the best lines around the track and it took a few races to get dialled in but we got there in the end." WORKINGTON duo Craig Cook and Andre Compton secured a last-heat 5-1 to give the Comets a 47-43 win over Newcastle - the only time during the meeting that they had been ahead! Team boss Ian Thomas told getnoticedonline.co.uk : "After the four point win at Newport and the brilliant bonus point at King's Lynn this was an excellent win against one of teams fancied for the League title. There was some excellent racing and to get a 5-1 in the last heat decider was a great way for it to finish."
