Hankey and Jelly knock on door for Parker win

A maiden pole position for Euan Hankey and a best-yet second position for Stephen Jelley indicated that Team Parker Racing is knocking on the door for a breakthrough win in the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB, but Croft did not provide the ultimate achievement of a victory. The team, which carried Tim Bridgman to the 2009 Carrera Cup title, showed good form in Friday’s test, with Hankey topping the times. The Somerset driver carried that pace into qualifying to take second on the grid on the North Yorkshire circuit for race one and pole position for race two. Leicester driver Jelley was just behind in third for race one, and fourth for race two.Unfortunately, Hankey got too much wheelspin at the start of race one. Jelley beat him into second place at the first corner, and Hankey was shouldered out wide and dropped to fourth. From there on the positions were set, with Jelley soaking up pressure from behind and allowing Hankey in turn to catch the second/third battle.“I got really good drive from the cleaner side of the grid,” smiled Jelley after his best-ever result in the Carrera Cup. “I tried to put down the lap times but I think the rear tyres were spent. I took time out of Tim Harvey who was leading, but the tyres went away and I thought I’d better consolidate.”Hankey said: “Early on in the race I had nothing, but in the middle and end of the race I had really strong pace.”The opposite was true in race two. Again Hankey was beaten away at the start, dropping to second. This time he was able to put race leader Harvey under pressure before falling away and losing second place. He even had to fight a very strong defence to prevent Jelley from stealing his third position.“That was the hardest race I’ve ever had to do,” said Hankey. “I had great pace early on but then the rear tyres just went completely. I’ve never experienced a car changing that much! This time the wheelspin wasn’t so bad at the start, but I had to push so hard to keep up with Tim that maybe it destroyed my tyres.”Carrera Cup rookies Hankey and Jelley have now moved up to third and fourth respectively in the points table, demoting Parker team-mate Glynn Geddie to fifth. This was a tough weekend for the Aberdeen driver, starting when he aborted a lap in qualifying after making a small mistake, then being shocked to discover it was only 0.7 seconds off his best time. If he’d kept it going he’d likely have improved on his fifth on the grid. In race one he slipped to an eventual eighth place, and felt that the rear wheels were locking on downshifts, making it difficult to defend his position. In race two he spun at the exit of the chicane, but charged back into the points from the back of the field to take 14th position.Team principal Stuart Parker summed up: “We genuinely had much better pace this weekend, but we didn’t capitalise as much as we could have done. Now we’ve got seven weeks before the next round at Snetterton to have a think and attack for wins in the second half of the year.”The Porsche Carrera Cup GB again enjoyed live coverage of both races at Croft on ITV4, and was streamed live on itv.com. The next round takes place at Snetterton in Norfolk on August 7/8.
