Kox And Hayek Storm To Super Trofeo Pole At Spa

Having missed the last three rounds of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, Peter Kox made an impact on his return to the series on 29 July 2010 at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. The sportscar veteran stormed to pole position in the closing stages of qualifying to put the #24 Blancpain Reiter Engineering Super Trofeo race car at the head of the field for round 10 tomorrow.

In wet conditions Kox’s team-mate Marc A. Hayek started qualifying and posted fast times, putting the #24 as high as third before handing over to team-mate Kox. With three minutes remaining of the 30-minute session, the Dutch driver delivered a flying lap of 2:47.902, putting the #24 Super Trofeo race car at the top of the timesheets. He then proceeded on another charging lap, bettering his lap time to 2:46.687 as the session finished.

Black Bull Swiss Racing’s Mirko Venturi set the second fastest lap time of 2:48.542 in the #46 Super Trofeo race car. The Italian had knocked the #1 Automobili Lamborghini VIP driver Allard Kalff off the top spot with 13 minutes remaining. Dutch driver Kalff’s fastest lap time of 2:49.016 was strong enough to put his team-mate and fellow countryman Rob Kamphues on the second row of the grid for the first race of the weekend, which takes place at 11:15 (CET) on Friday 30 July.

Current Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Pro Drivers’ leader Fabio Babini set the fourth fastest lap time of 2:49.493 in the #22 MIK Corse race car, while #2 Automobili Lamborghini VIP driver John Barker completed the top five having lapped the historic circuit in 2:49.577.

“We started the season well in Hockenheim and we’re hoping to continue that way here at Spa,” said Kox. “It was a good session for us and Marc did a fantastic job, especially considering the difficulty of the track and the conditions.”

Hayek added: “Spa is fantastic! It’s probably the most interesting and most challenging track on the calendar. There is no room to try a different racing line: you have to get it right, and with the weather difficult to foresee, it is made even more of a challenge.”

Round 10 of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo takes place tomorrow at 11:15 (CET), followed by round 11 at 16:30 (CET).
