FIM Speedway Italian SGP returns to Terenzano in 2011

FIM Speedway Grand Prix series organisers BSI Speedway have confirmed Terenzano will stage the FIM Italian SGP for a third straight season in 2011.

The venue near Udine in north eastern Italy hosted its first World Championship round in 2009, which was won by current SGP series leader Tomasz Gollob on his debut appearance at the track.

This year’s event takes place there on Saturday night, when Gollob could end a near 20-year wait for his first world title if he scores six more points than Jason Crump and five more than Jaroslaw Hampel.

With Terenzano possibly on the brink of staging a piece of SGP history, BSI Speedway managing director Paul Bellamy is delighted to have extended their contract with promoters MC Olimpia for another year.

He said: “We were impressed by the efforts of everyone who helped make last year’s event at Terenzano a great success and I’m confident the Italian SGP will get bigger and better this year and in 2011.

“Italy has a fantastic history of motorsport and we may see another piece of history this weekend if Tomasz secures the world title.“Polish broadcaster Canal+ are taking a full studio out to Terenzano and I know the speedway world will watch with excitement.“Bringing the Speedway Grand Prix series to Italy will help the sport go from strength to strength in the country, and I have to thank the MC Olimpia club for their tireless work and support.”

Simone Terenzani from MC Olimpia said: “We are honoured to be staging the Italian SGP for the third season in a row and I’d like to thank all the members of Moto Club Olimpia for making this possible.“We are determined to build on the success of the first Grand Prix staged at Terenzano last year and look forward to welcoming fans from all over the world this weekend and again in 2011.”
