Prior to the opening round of the Formula Kart Stars series at Kimbolton in three weeks’ time (7/9 April), RL Racing Department took the opportunity to give its drivers a test run at the Cambridgeshire circuit and again saw some excellent performances.
Sam Marsh won the Junior Max final with his team-mates, reigning FKS Mini Max champion Josh White and Oli Norris, both inside the top ten. Marsh stormed through from 9th place on the grid to take a comfortable victory.
“Sam did a fantastic job and once in the lead controlled the race from the front. Around a circuit where slipstreaming is very important, to achieve what he did was fantastic, he was unstoppable!” said team owner Steve Armstrong.
Lando Norris was arguably the fastest competitor in a large Mini Max field and demonstrated his superior pace by carving through the pack to hit the front. On this occasion however, the slipstreaming made it virtually impossible for the RL driver to pull away. “It all got a bit ‘involved’ on the last lap and when Lando was going back for the lead, the 3rd-placed man was able to dive past and snatch the win. It was an exciting finale and shows that when it matters, we have what it takes to fight for podiums.” On her racing return to the team, Gaby Weyer also impressed. “It was her first race in five months and her debut in Mini Max, she acquitted herself very well,” observed Armstrong. “Gaby was lapping within a few tenths of the fastest drivers, but just lacked a little race sharpness - especially in the second heat and the final. She took a fine 7th place in her first heat and that shows me her potential.”
Flashman Finneran’s progress showed when he snatched 4th place at the start of the final. Sadly a mechanical problem put paid to his chances of further progression and he dropped back. Taking comfort from the positives, the RL boss said: “His pace was clear to see this weekend and he continues to make great strides forward.” Senior Max front-runner Lewis Plato was both fast and furious after the final, as Steve explains: “Lewis was knocked off twice. These things happen from time to time but I’m satisfied that he again showed great heart and speed. We’re all in good shape now and really looking forward to the start of the Formula Kart Stars season.”
