Scottish Formula Ford champion steps up

Kenneth Thirlwall joins Myerscough College team for Oulton Park

The Myerscough College team is to return to the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain, and will begin its 2012 campaign at Oulton Park over Easter with reigning Scottish Formula Ford Champion Kenneth Thirlwall at the wheel.

Thirlwall, 22 and from East Lothian, will race a Duratec-powered Van Diemen LA10 in the championship’s opening rounds, with the Myerscough squad partnering with Fluid Motorsport for their return to the series.

Kenneth comes to the championship with an enviable Formula Ford track record - he went unbeaten in his home country last season to add the Scottish Formula Ford title to the national crown he won in Mini racing north of the border in 2009.

Thirlwall plans to start both the Dunlop MSA series as well as the national championship for Kent-engined Formula Fords: “At the moment we are struggling for budget. Hopefully I can go well at Oulton Park and get a result, which would help me look for sponsors to see me through the season.”

Belinda Cookson, head of Myerscough Motorsport, commented: “This is fantastic news for Myerscough College and we are looking forward to welcoming Kenneth into the Myerscough family. I am sure that together we can have a fantastic event at Oulton Park and hopefully this will signal the start of a strong Formula Ford season in 2012.”

Myerscough’s technical team will be made up of a mix of first- and second-year foundation degree students who are using the experience as part of their studies. The students will have responsibility for working on the car, gathering the technical data and managing themselves while on the event. This gives the students a unique opportunity of gaining real life experience in the motorsport industry.

Belinda Cookson added: “The mix of academic and practical experience is what Myerscough is all about. Being involved in events like this and working with drivers of Kenneth’s calibre is a fantastic opportunity for the students.”

The opening round of the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain is scheduled for Easter Saturday (7 April) at Oulton, with two further races following on Bank Holiday Monday.
