Campos Racing´s driver Facu Regalia clinched his first podium ever in the Auto GP World Series held at Circuit de Valencia. A solid race performed after a bad start was good enough to finish on podium and a great result taking into account it is just his fourth race in this championship.
Starting second on the grid, Facu made a bad start and was overtaken by four cars. However he didn´t give up and both team and driver changed the pit strategy. Regalia pitted at the end of third lap and completed the race in a way of qualifying simulation, attacking every lap.
This strategy proved to be good, because Campos Racing´s driver was faster than drivers leading the race. When everyone had pitted, Regalia ran in second place just behind Adrian Quaife-Hobbs, leading both race and championship classifications. Regalia had no chance to relax, because other drivers with newer tyres were having a strong end of race but managed to be second yet.
Regalia explained afterwards that “my main target was to make a good start, but definitively it was a bad one. I lost some places and, after just one lap I was running in 6th. Then we chose to change my pit strategy, pitting after three laps, and rejoining the field my race pace was quite good, even faster than Adrian Quaife-Hobbs. At the end I struggled to keep going fast because minor brakes issues and old tyres didn´t help. Anyway I feel happy with my podium, obviously a win would have been better, but this result is a morale booster!”.
The championship has scheduled its third meeting of 2012 season in two weeks time in Marrakech.
