Team Parker Racings Sam Tordoff won the final Porsche Carrera Cup GB race of the season at Brands Hatch to finish the season in style. The Yorkshiremans victoryhis fourth of the seasonmeant that Team Parker Racing ended the 2012 campaign with six wins, the joint-highest total of any of the teams in the series. Both races were held in wet conditions, and Tordoffs win followed on from a fine charging drive to second place in the opening race. From fifth on the grid, Tordoff got up to fourth at the start. He then closed in on team-mate and fellow Yorkshireman Richard Plant, who had started from a fine front-row position after qualifying second, and passed him on the fourth lap. Then on the 10th lap of 17, he twice managed to squeeze ahead of Rory Butcher and into second place.By this time the gap to race winner Jonas Gelzinis was too large, and Tordoff settled for second place. But in the second race, which he started on the front row, he immediately got ahead of Gelzinis at the start and simply extended his lead, winning by four seconds.Unfortunately for Tordoff, he fell narrowly short in the three-way battle for second in the championship, finally claiming third in the points.I just had to win the racethat was the top and the bottom of it, and the rest would take care of themselves, he said. I did everything I could. It was quite a nice drive. I was on new wet tyres and Jonas was on used rubber so that helped me get a gap. Third in the championship is still a good result and its been a great couple of races today. While Plant fell to an eventual seventh in race one, he turned the tables in race two to finish the season strongly with fourth place, at the same venue where he won the opening race of the season back in April.Daniel Lloyd, another of Team Parker Racings Yorkshiremen and the other to win a race this season, had a pair of strong races. He fought his way to fourth in race one, passing Ben Barker with a few laps to run to take the position. In the second race Lloyd was in stunning form, carving his way from seventh on the grid to third in the first six laps. He then slashed the gap to second-placed Barker, setting fastest lap by more than half a second, but a spin dropped him to sixth. He recovered fifth thanks to an amazing pass on two-time champion James Sutton, around the outside into Sheene Curve.Cheshire driver Andy Meyrick was out of luck in qualifying, spinning into the gravel trap at Paddock Hill Bend when he was forced off-line as a rival car exited the pit lane. But he put in a fine drive in race one, climbing from 10th on the grid to sixth and pressuring Barker for fifth at the end. He was forced out at the beginning of race two when he was hit by a rival on the opening lap.Team Parker Racings run of form meant that the squad took the fight to Red Line Racing for the Carrera Cup GB teams championship down to the wire, falling short by only eight points after 20 races over 10 weekends.Team principal Stuart Parker said: Its a nice way to end the year. Our five cars were 1-2-3-4-6 in Friday testing in the wet, which was brilliant, and that form carried through to the races. In qualifying, which was dry, I think we were hampered by our lack of dry running on Friday and a lack of experience on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit that our drivers have in these carsparticularly Dan and Andy, who had never driven a Carrera Cup car here. But Richard and Sam were exceptionally good in qualifying, and Sam could have done even better if it hadnt been red-flagged when he was on his run on his second set of tyres. They all did a good job in race one. We ran Sam on used wets and that was the right choice for the conditionsif hed started further up he could have given Gelzinis a closer run for the win. Then he was utterly dominant in race two.Dan was magnificent in that race, and if it hadnt been for his mistake hed have been secondthat was an extraordinary pass he did on Sutton, and to be six tenths faster than anyone else is some pace!Andy had a really solid race earlier on, and it was a shame he got hit in the second race. Richard had a good weekend as wellwe changed the car a bit for race two and he went very well.Even though we just lost out on the teams championship, its great to end the year on a high. You always think about the what ifs?, but youre only as good as your last race and we won ours!PIERCE IS A WINNER IN PRO-AM1 CLASS
Derek Pierce had a storming weekend with his JD Pierce with Team Parker machine to claim a win and a second in the pro-am1 class, and snatch second in the championship at the last gasp. The Scot was on inspired form in the first race. He got ahead of pole-winning champion Ahmad Al Harthy at the start, but the Omani kept the pressure on throughout. To stay ahead of Al Harthy, Pierce had to pass newly-crowned overall champion Michael Meadows and 2007/10 title winner James Sutton, sweeping around the outside of Sutton into the ultra-high-speed Hawthorns bend in a brave move with three laps remaining. He ran third in class in the second race, but moved up to second when Al Harthy spun off. Pierce constantly kept the pressure on Victor Jimenez, and was just eight tenths of a second adrift of making it a class-winning double. The result also meant that Pierce deservedly claimed the runner-up spot in the pro-am1 championship.Team principal Stuart Parker said: Im delighted for Derek. He drove the car the best Ive ever seen him drive, and to overtake two overall Carrera Cup championswhove won three titles between themin one race was really impressive! Its a great end to the season for him.As part of the ultra-popular British Touring Car Championship package, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB enjoyed live coverage from the second race at Brands Hatch on ITV4 and ITV4 HD, and was streamed live at itv.com/touringcars.
