BIG EVENT LATESTBERWICK are preparing for a Polish invasion when the World Under-21 Final comes to Shielfield Park on Saturday August 10.The Bandits are staging the second meeting in the three-round series, and the 14 full-time riders in the competition have now been determined following the three semi-finals.They will be joined by two Wild Cards, who are likely to be British, with GB co-boss Phil Morris already having made a strong case for the inclusion of Kyle Howarth, who agonisingly missed out on a place in the competition proper.Half of the field will be Polish, and they include former Coventry and Poole rider Piotr Pawlicki and the spectacular Bartosz Zmarzlik, who sensationally made the rostrum in his Grand Prix debut as a Wild Card last season. The line-up also includes Swindons Kacper Gomolski, 2012 World Cup winner Mikkel Bech, and Latvian youngster Andrej Lebedev who was close to a move to Poole recently. It will be the second year in succession that the Bandits have hosted a major FIM event, as last year they staged a round of the Grand Prix qualifying series.Berwick co-promoter Ryan Anderson said: We are so proud the FIM, and the British authorities, have awarded us this huge event.   I take it as a massive compliment to our staff, who worked miracles in staging our first FIM meeting last season despite heavy rain before and during racing. We received so many compliments on the quality and work ethic of our track-staff, and on our overall presentation of the eventbut to be awarded another, even more-important, FIM meeting so soon is really quite an honour.Speedway is without doubt helping to put Berwick-upon-Tweed pretty firmly on the map.WORLD UNDER-21 FINALQUALIFIED RIDERS: Vaclav Milik (Czech Republic), Andrej Lebedev (Latvia), Nicklas Porsing (Denmark), Wladimir Borodulin (Russia), Mikkel Michelsen (Denmark), Patryk Dudek (Poland),  Artur Cjaza (Poland), Piotr Pawlicki (Poland), Kacper Gomolski (Poland), Tobiasz Musielak (Poland), Adam Strzelec (Poland), Nikolaj Jakobsen (Denmark),  Mikkel Bech Jensen (Denmark), Bartosz Zmarzlik (Poland).SPEEDWAYGB EVENTS SERIES 2013BRITISH UNDER-21 FINAL: ROBERT BRANFORDBRITISH FINAL: TAI WOFFINDENPREMIER LEAGUE PAIRS: Somerset, May 31PREMIER LEAGUE FOURS: Peterborough, July 14PREMIER LEAGUE RIDERS CHAMPIONSHIP: Sheffield, Sept 22ELITE LEAGUE RIDERS CHAMPIONSHIP: Swindon, Oct 12NATIONAL LEAGUE MAJOR EVENTS:NATIONAL LEAGUE PAIRS: Mildenhall, June 30NATIONAL LEAGUE FOURS: Stoke, August 18NATIONAL LEAGUE RIDERS CHAMPIONSHIP: Rye House, Sept 21BRITISH SPEEDWAY FIM EVENT DATES:WORLD UNDER-21 CHAMPIONSHIP Round 3: Berwick, August 10GRAND PRIX CHALLENGE: Poole, August 24

BELLE VUE skipper Ales Dryml says an improved spirit is key to the Aces enjoying some better fortunes this season, although they have been short on fixtures of late.Dryml told Speedway Star: We had a good start to the season and got good results home and away, now we must try and carry that on to try and get into the top four places. This year the spirit is really good, we all get on and everybody helps everybody else. If you ever have a problem you have someone who will be there to help you, and we have shown that we are a proper team.BIRMINGHAM star Martin Smolinski is determined to keep up his stunning run of form when he moves into the Brummies top five next monthhaving played a starring role in their recent wins at Swindon and Wolverhampton.Smolinski told the Birmingham Mail: In my mind its just a number and it doesnt really matter. Ive been riding well so far and I feel really confident in my equipment. That isnt going to change when I move up to the main body, so Im sure I can keep going as I am.COVENTRY gave their season a huge lift with a maximum haul of seven points from their Bank Holiday Monday clashes with Peterborough to move up from ninth to sixth in the Elite League table.Manager Gary Havelock said: Im over the moonlooking at these meetings yesterday we probably felt four points from the day would be a decent achievement, so to get seven is fantastic, and its all down to the boys. All seven of them, at one stage or another, have come up trumps and its been a real team effort. Perhaps earlier in the season we might have folded being behind at home, but the boys are riding with a bit of confidence now, and it makes such a difference.EASTBOURNE boss Trevor Geer says finding the right man to replace the retired Adam Shields is proving to be easier said than done.Geer told Speedway Star: We have got 7.1 points to play with, which is a decent amount, but the difficulty is getting these riders who are going well abroad but arent in this country. We try to get them to this country when they are busy with Poland and Sweden and the rest, and they all keep coming back with the same answer. They struggle to fit us in.LAKESIDE co-promoter Jon Cook says Hammers duo Robert Mear and Kim Nilsson could still play a part this season despite being left out of the side following the recent signing of Sebastian Ulamek, with Adam Ellis stepping up to a reserve spot.Cook said: I spoke with Robert when Rye House came on to us with a firm place and we think this is a timely move for him. He has had three meetings failing to beat an opponent sandwiched between a 10 paid 11 point score so clearly consistency is needed and being on his bike more can only help that. As far as Kim is concerned the break in fixtures due to Grand Prix weeks means we can get the best of both worlds in almost operating a squad system so, as the lower averaging of the top five riders, he will miss the next two meetings while we make up our minds on which is the best top five to take forward. We are mindful of the fact that when Kim shines away we tend to win and we need to counter that with the greater consistency of other of his team-mates at home.KINGS LYNN boss Rob Lyon admits injuries have played a huge part in slowing down the Stars after an impressive start to the seasonalthough they remain well in the play-off hunt.Lyon told lovespeedway24.co.uk: Its frustrating. Its difficult to win, or get points out of matches, with five riders really. Weve not had a full team for a while with injuries and whatever else.It is frustrating because we know that with a full side we can be a match for anybody, Im confident of that.PETERBOROUGH boss Jan Staechmann admits the Panthers have to quickly find solutions to their problems after suffering double defeat to Coventry on Bank Holiday Monday, including a heavy reverse at the Showground.Staechmann told the Peterborough Telegraph: We have to think about what we can do to turn the season around. We need to come up with a plan and go from there. There was a marked improvement in performance from most of the riders in the afternoon to the night meeting, but only a victory would have done really.POOLE promoter Matt Ford says his side must break their unusual habit of conceding points at home if they are to make a sustained move up the Elite League table.Ford said: I would much prefer us to try and sew the result up earlier than Heat 15 as maximising our league points is absolutely key to us now having dropped points here already this season. We still have two home defeats against our name and a lot of ground to make up on the top four - a place that is our target between now and the end of our league programme.SWINDON are urging fans to start their Cardiff weekend early by taking in one of the biggest Elite League meetings of the season on Thursday when they face Poole in a repeat of last years Grand Final.Robins boss Alun Rossiter said: We are expecting a really entertaining meeting with the best riders in the world on display."And we look forward to welcoming visiting fans who are starting their Grand Prix weekend on Thursday by coming to the Abbey."WOLVERHAMPTON boss Peter Adams felt his side had faced in-form Birmingham at the wrong time after seeing their unbeaten home record ended by the Brummies on a night when Ty Proctor was absent and Adam Skornicki made his comeback from injury.Adams said: Our lower order struggled against Birminghams strong reserves, and Adam also had a bad night after opting to ride even though hes not quite fully fit.We need to get the team back together in full fitness, and once that happens Im sure we can recapture our form.

BERWICK have issued a big thanks to their supporters for making their televised encounter with Newcastle last week such a successapart from the result, as far as the home club were concerned!Commercial manager Phil Newton said: Although the match result didn't go as we might have wished, there is no doubt that a feeling of pride and honour had swept through the stadium, enveloping everyone. That was in the main down to our tremendous supporters, who not only attended in great numbers but also in great spirits.EDINBURGH skipper Derek Sneddon enjoyed a milestone day at Glasgow with his first ever away maximum, as the Monarchs ran riot to secure one of the biggest wins on the road in their history.Boss Alex Harkess said: When we started with three 5-1s, I just wondered to myselfwheres this going? Every one of them went there wanting to be a success, and every one of them was. I asked captain Derek if hed ever had an away maximum before and he replied quicklyNever! So special congratulations to him.GLASGOW boss Sean Courtney admits changes may be required at Ashfield after seeing his side slip to a humbling 32-61 defeat on their own circuit at the hands of local rivals Edinburgh.Courtney said: We did build a team bringing three pretty raw riders in, expecting that we would have the strength to carry those riders. But for some reason it hasn't worked. I'm not going to go into saying why it hasn't worked or talk about riders because we have to be above that. Theres every chance there will be a restructuring of the team.IPSWICH will stage the first Great Britain v Australia Test Match of this summers series at Foxhall on Thursday.Line-ups: GB: Lewis Bridger, Josh Auty, Ben Barker, Adam Ellis, Richie Worrall, Leigh Lanham, Richard Lawson; Australia: Alex Davies, Dakota North, Cameron Woodward, Rohan Tungate, Aaron Summers, Jason Doyle, Josh Grajczonek.LEICESTER have taken over at the top of the table after a six-point haul over Plymouth at the weekend, but they will travel to Sheffield on Thursday without Magnus Karlsson due to Swedish commitments.Lions co-promoter Alan Jones said: It is unfortunate that we are without Magnus at Sheffield for what is an important fixture for us, particularly as we are on a roll with five consecutive league wins to our credit. Magnus is required to ride for his Swedish club Ornarna in an Allsvenskan League fixture and they have first call on his services as he did not re-join Leicester until after he had signed for them.NEWCASTLE kept their strong run going with a 50-39 home win over Scunthorpe on Sunday, with the Diamonds continuing to cover for the pre-season injury to Andrew Tully.Manager George English said: Richie (Worrall) was again in superb form to hit a big score and well deserved as ever, whilst Christians (Henry) purple patch is continuing too, and long may it do so as were definitely after honours.PLYMOUTH broke their run of defeats with a League Cup success at Rye House on Sundaybut co-promoter Ashley Taylor knows sorting out their home form is a priority.Taylor said: We do not have another meeting until June 7 and it is up to come back on that night with a winning team. There are elements that are under-performing. But the buck stops with us and it is up to us to come up with the riders to make Plymouth a winning team.REDCAR will host National League club Dudley on Thursday as the Julie Lewis Memorial Trophy switches from an individual format to a team event.Promoter Brian Havelock said: We believed that a team event followed by an extra individual race would be very compelling for fans. It also gives Hugh Skidmore the opportunity to get back into regular action after a campaign disrupted by injury plus a chance to extend the experience of two of our talented local talented Cubs Dan Phillips and Luke Crang who have recent and current National League team places respectively.RYE HOUSE skipper Jason Bunyan returned to action following his lengthy injury-absence with a score of paid four in the Rockets League Cup defeat at home to Plymouth last Sunday.Bunyan said: I was always going to start off slowly; Ive just not been able to practice this week because of weather so it was a case of going straight back into racing. Its the first time that Ive got my leg over a bike since Easter Monday, and you could tell it early on. But it felt fine, and I managed to pull one out at the end.SCUNTHORPE promoter Rob Godfrey apologised for a bad day at the office as the Scorpions long unbeaten home run in the Premier League was smashed by Somerset on Bank Holiday Monday with a 56-37 result.Godfrey said: I can only apologise to the fans for this performance. I realise the fans are disappointed that we lost and also by the manner in which we lost, but believe me, there was no-one in the stadium more disappointed than me. Somerset were brilliant - they rode like the home team, while we rode like the away team.SHEFFIELD skipper Simon Stead is a major doubt for the clubs Premier League clash with Leicester on Thursday and the Premier League Pairs 24-hours later, after a comeback in Poland from a hand injury did not go according to plan.Stead said: I honestly thought that Id be okay but I could barely hold onto the bike and I only managed three points from four rides. I will go to the sports injury clinic this week to consult my doctors and see what the prognosis is, but Im really not sure whether Ill make any of my scheduled meetings this week.SOMERSET collected their first-ever away win at Scunthorpe with an emphatic 56-37 victory on Bank Holiday Monday afternoonat the venue where they narrowly missed out on the Premier League title last season.Manager Garry May said: That was just an awesome display by each and every member of the team. Even though Scunthorpe did come back at us after we banged in those 5-1s in the opening three heats, we didnt panic and went out and did the business in the second half of the meeting, and more than deserved our win and more importantly the four league points we took back to Somerset with us.WORKINGTON are hoping to maintain their fine record in the Premier League Pairs following on from the success of Rene Bach and Adam Roynon in last years staging at Somersets Oak Tree Arena.Comets co-promoter and team manager Tony Jackson said: Down the years we have had a very good record in the Pairs, with six wins in the fourteen stagings since the sport returned to Workington in 1999; and none of them with the same pairing twice. This year sees us with another new pairing as Richard Lawson and Rene Bach represent the club, which ironically would have been last years pairing but for a last minute injury to Richard that saw Adam Roynon get an eleventh hour call-up which had such spectacular results. Since the event was moved to Somerset on Grand Prix eve, which was a master-stroke by the organisers, our record has been good: in the five events where we have appeared we have made the semi-final every time, going on to win twice, in 2008 and then again last year. Obviously that record cant go on forever, but we will be going all out to maintain it if we canalthough with every race being like a Heat 15 it will be tough, as always.FIXTURE PICTURE
