Scottish youngster Gregor Ramsay recovered from being spun out in both races to claim more points from the latest round of the Formula Renault ALPS series at Misano.Seventeen-year-old Ramsay finished ninth in the first race of the weekend after clawing his way back in style from the first incident, which left him down in 13th place at the end of the opening lap.In the second race there was even more overtaking. Gregor was way down in 27th position on the first lap, but recovered to take 13th at the chequered flag.Free practice at Misano, which is right next to the Adriatic coast of Italy, had been encouraging for Ramsay and the Euronova Racing team. Gregor led the teams charge to finish in the top eight in two of the three sessions.
All looked good for qualifying, and Ramsay was third in his group at the halfway point when everyone pitted for new tyres. But a mistake in the second sector on his hot lap on his second set of Michelins left Gregor sixth in his group, and 12th on the grid for both races. With temperatures soaring towards 40 degrees, the tyres had a very narrow peak operating window and there was no further chance to improve.Ramsay made a fine recovery in the first race. He was up to 10th by the second lap and chasing Euronova team-mate Ukyo Sasahara. Both Sasahara and Ramsay gained another place with three laps remaining.Despite having pace over his team-mate, which netted him the sixth fastest lap of the race, Gregor found it impossible to make a move on a tight circuit that is renowned for its lack of passing opportunities. In the second race, a brave move around the outside of Turn 8 on the opening lap failed to come off and Ramsay plunged to the back of the field after getting stuck on the grass. Helped by a safety car that closed the field up, he made up 14 places thanks to overtaking and incidents to finish not far adrift of the points.I was disappointed with qualifying, because thats what was really crucial as far as the outcome of the weekend was concerned, said Gregor.I felt I should have been in the first two or three rows of the grid, but starting on the sixth row I was always going to be in the pack. But I really enjoyed the recovery drives, especially as the first one ended with me finishing in the top nine. I had to work extremely hard to come through the field on a circuit that is so difficult to race on.There is now a gap of a few weeks before Ramsay is back in action in the next round of the Formula Renault ALPS series, at the Tuscany circuit of Mugello on September 7th/8th.
